Modems

Here is what Symantec has to say about the HCF modems. Why would Compaq put such an inferior modem in their computers? I have been complaining that the HCF style modem is inferior and have been told this now by Symantec, BellSouth and Earthlink. Why doesn't Compaq replace this with a recall?

"HCF/HSP/PCTel modems do not recognize incoming calls or negotiate with a receiving fax device, and the computer may stop responding when used with WinFax PRO

Situation:
You are running WinFax PRO 10 and you are using a PCTel, Host Controlled Family (HCF) or Host Signal Processing (HSP) modem. The modem may fail to recognize incoming calls, may fail to negotiate with a receiving fax device, and the computer may stop responding when receiving a fax. The modem may also not be reset when finished sending or receiving a fax.

Solution:
The HCF/HSP/PCTel modems use special drivers to emulate a Winmodem. If the modem driver fails for any reason, no program can access the modem.
It is recommended that you download and install the latest modem drivers from the modem manufacturer.
If this does not resolve the problem, you need to replace the modem with a hardware-based modem.

Compaq could not advise me of a modem driver, but I have found them on the Internet. That had no effect.
