Moving Disks from 641 to 5i

I am moving disks from ML370 G3 (with Smart Array 641) to DL380 G3 (Smart Array 5i), when the Windows Server 2003 logo appears, the server restarts, any suggestions.

I dont think so it will work. Even it will work It will be painfull to make it work and wont be stable.

CT:

Try adding in the 5i registry key. It is likely that since Windows does not know about the 5i, it can't boot from it properly. I have attached the keys for the 5i and 6i controllers.

Re: Moving Disks from 641 to 5i

Hi Steve,

Can you tell me offline method of updating the registry key in current offline windows server?
Because i have never done that.
I think we need to have go through recovery console.

Re: Moving Disks from 641 to 5i

CT:

You would ovbiously need to run the registry key file from the ML system, then move the disks.

PS:

For doing it offline, I would assume you can edit the registry somehow in the recovery console. You would just have to manually add the registry key. I have never done it so can not offer a procedure at this point.

I would have to try and play around with it some and get back to you.

Re: Moving Disks from 641 to 5i

Hi Caster, please don├в t waste your time changing registry hives and placing your data on risk, what you can do is: put the 6xx controller in the server with the 5i, change the boot control order in the RBSU pressing F9 when prompted, and have the server booting from the 6xx controller, run the PSP to bind a driver to the 5i controller, shut it down, connect the drives to the 5i, change the boot controller order, and it should boot up. PSP can be downloaded from this page http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/index.html

Re: Moving Disks from 641 to 5i

Hi,

How about this.
Since it is tested by on of our forum member why cannot we try with 5i and 641 also.

Re: Moving Disks from 641 to 5i

RaMpaNTe:

That sounds like a lot of extra work to do, especially since the registry entry does not "change" anything, it adds a new entry into the proper location.

CT:

As a fallback, you can always remove one of your drives, if your OS is on a 2 disk array.

ALWAYS performa a good backup previous to doing this kind of work.

Re: Moving Disks from 641 to 5i

I would try way with 64x installed additional and than downgrade to 5i

If you feel confident with registry it less complicated

If you have spare HDD enough you can make backup one by one, simulating failure pulling drive when server down and replacing

For curiosity and notes if you tried did safe mode cause restart also?
