Moving hot pluggable drives between two different Smart Array Controllers

Hi All,

We have a Proliant DL380 G2 server running Windows 2000 Server (SP4). The server is currently configured with an integrated Smart Array 5i Controller with 4*36GB disks. These four disks are set up as two RAID 1 arrays containing two drives each (Array A (system) & Array B (data)). Note, all these drives are on the same channel.

We are planning to install a dual channel Smart Array 5302/128 array controller and move array B (2*36GB data partition) to this controller i.e. in a SmartWorks 4354 split shelf. Hence, we would like to place the two drives of Array B onto two seperate channels of the enclosure.

Is it possible to move the drives to the new controller and configure them on two different channels without performing a backup and restore?

Anyone, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Re: Moving hot pluggable drives between two different Smart Array Controllers

First - add new controller to the server and add all drivers for it under W2K. Otherwise you can't boot from this controller - W2K do not add drivers and will crash with "blue screen".
Second - shut down server (be sure that it is OFF) and move your HDD to 4354 connected to SA5302.
Third - turn on server - set up SA5302 as first booting controller.

and everything should work fine. Firmware on SA5302 should be the newest.
