Moving storage.

Hi Guys,

Ok, I have a DL380 running win2k with a 4200 array controller.

Attached to the controller I have a 4314 storage unit with a Raid 5 array.

The Raid 5 set has about 330GB of images on it and I don't want to loose the data.

Now the question is I can I take this storage box and attach it to another server running win2k which has a 5300 controller in it.

Can anybody foresee any problems with me doing this?.

Before I attempt to do it ill make sure firmware and bios are up to date.

Thanks for your help guys.

Re: Moving storage.

This shouldn't be a problem. First, BACK UP YOUR DATA - yes absolutely! Then just attach the storage box to the 5300 controller and run the Array Config Utility (ACU). It should automatically recognize the RAID configuration. You may have to go into Disk Manager and reassign drive letters (if you had any overlapping ones). The other thing to watch is if the addition of the 4314 to the 5300 results in more than 32 LUNs (probably not a problem, but need to check). Once you run the ACU, just save your config and you should be good to go.

Thanks,
Doug

Re: Moving storage.

hi allen

doug is a 100% right. there should be no problems. and doug IS an expert (he did several compaq trainings over here in germany).
------------------------------------------
just make sure to attach the box when the server is powered off.
------------------------------------------
when you power on, the smart 53xx should give you a message like this:

new array(s) detected - configuration automatically updated

and THATS IT.
-------------------------------------------
just make sure your controllers firmware is as current as possible.

best regards
ernesto

ps: i have done array movements quite often.

ther iS ONL ONE THING TO TAKE CARE OF:

DO NOT (!!!) move an array when one disk is missing (degraded state). this could get you up the creek.
