NIC teaming, how many IPs required

Hi,
I have a question about setup of NIC teaming on a DL380 with two NICs.
How many IP's are required to setup a NIC team for load balancing ?

Currently only One NIC has an IP and is active. The other NIC is disabled.

I asked this question before and the reply was just one IP. But after reading other resources on the web it appears that 3 IPs are required. One for each NIC and One for the Virtaul NIC.
Is this correct ?

Appreciate any info.
regards

Re: NIC teaming, how many IPs required

Nic teaming creat it own MAC address and then it get IP adresse.

Best example is do IPCONFIG /all, you will only see the virtuel nic to have on IP adresse with it Virtuel MAC Address,if you see all the other adresse then it not setup corectly.

Re: NIC teaming, how many IPs required

Thanks for the replies,

Daniel, I do not have NIC teaming setup so I cannot check anything as you suggested.
I was trying to figure out how many IP's I required in total. 2 or 3.

After reading the PDF, happy dude provided. It looks like I need 3 IPs in total.
NIC 1 - existing IP
NIC 2 - New IP
Virtual NIC - New IP for this combined NIC.

Thanks again.
I'm off to get some IPs organised.

Re: NIC teaming, how many IPs required

Hi,

What made you say that ?

The whole point of creating a team, is that the physical resources are hidden behind a virtual interface.

You give the team (the virtual interface) the IP address. The NICs themselves don't have one.

Look at Figure 3-3 (page 14) in the PDF document posted earlier. That shows that you just need the one IP address.

Re: NIC teaming, how many IPs required

Thanks Rob,
The way I read it was.
Figure 3-3 is the end result. Once I have implemented the NIC teaming only One IP will be used by the Virtual NIC.

however the underlying NICs should still have their own individual IPs. Incase the NIC teaming fails etc. the individual NIC will be able to provide connectivity as they will have their own IPs.

Is that a wrong assumtion ?

Or should I be using the One existing IP from the first NIC, create teaming and assign this IP to the virtual NIC ? Is that what you would suggest.

Re: NIC teaming, how many IPs required

You need 1 IP.

Clear IP on existing NIC's
Setup teaming (defaults takes NIC 1 MAC)
Assign IP setting to new "virtual" NIC
plug both nics into switch
done

thanks Difladermaus,
thats exactly the explanation I was looking for. Clear and concise instructions.
