NT Backup problems

We've been experiencing intermittent backup problems using NT backup software which when you look up NT references point to a Hardware, SCSI controller error. We've had the system board changed and the tape drive changed and I'm running out of ideas as to what it could be. The error that causes all the problems shows up in the backup log as

Tape device reported an error on a request to write data to tape.

Error reported:
Bus reset.

or

Tape device reported an error on a request to write data to tape.

Error reported:
Hardware failure.

They both report in NT as Error 9 The device, \Device\ScsiPort0, did not respond within the timeout period. Source Symc8xx
and the backup halts at that point.

The error occurs sporadically during the day along with another error
Error 11 Source symc8xx The driver detected a controller error on \Device\ScsiPort0.

We have a Archive Python 27871-xxx1214 tape drive in the server.

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing these hardware errors.
