Re: Need suggestion on how to add HDD to an existing array

first of all make a backup

you will need Array configuration utility (ACU)
to expand and extend, depends on your OS
look for Array Configuration Utility
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/family/model/5561.html?lang=en&cc=us&prodSeriesId=397634

download ACU manual, see page 24
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00294139/c00294139.pdf

to create or extend a partition you have to use a 3 party software

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/partitionexpert/index.html

and also take a look of this thread

Re: Need suggestion on how to add HDD to an existing array

the result is dependant on the OS used.
In case of w2k3 there is no problem.
Ofcourse it's always preferred to do a backup first.
Then put the drive in the server. Start ACU and add the new drive to the array. Within ACU extend the raid5 volume with the capacity of the newly added drive.
Within windows disk manager the extra size is immediately seen and can be used to create an extra partition.
