New harddisk in raid 5

Hi everyone

I had a single disk failure in my raid 5 setup. So i immediately called my supplyer to get a replacement drive.

Now that i got the disk i notised that the spare number it not the same as the one that died.

I then called my supplyer and asked him why i didnt give me the right disk.

He said that to his knowlege is was not a problem to integrate the one i got into my raid configuration.

My question is: Is he right or should i get another harddisk?

The ones in my current raid is: 146GB Dual Port 10K SAS with spare no. 418399-001

and the one i got is: 146GB 6G Dual Port 10K SAS with spare no. 507283-001

Re: New harddisk in raid 5

The replacement will be fine. Your original drives are 3G SAS, the new disk is 6G SAS, it will work fine and run at 3G like the rest of your drives

Re: New harddisk in raid 5

Hey, yeup, just like Jimmy said. It'll throttle down. Maybe they don't make 3G drives anymore?

Re: New harddisk in raid 5

I have one more question..

What is the normal procedure when changing a harddisk when the server is running ESXi?

And what about monitoring the rebuild progress?

Re: New harddisk in raid 5

Which server (model and Generation please) and which RAID card do you have?

If you have a smart array card then you can replace it and it will automagically start the rebuild. This is independent of the OS.

Re: New harddisk in raid 5

My server is a DL380 G6 with a P410i controller... so its just a pull and plug?

Re: New harddisk in raid 5

Yes.

There's quite a lot of posts on the Internet when I search for smart array monitoring and ESX. Seems to be agents available if you use the HP ESXi bundle.
