New user needs assistance!

Hello all!

Please point me in the right direction, I'll do my best to take care of the rest.

I have just purchased through Ebay a Proliant 1600R 6/500, dual Pentium 500 with 1024 RAM and 5 drive array (9.1's). I am a total newbie and so assume to know nothing when it comes to servers in general but am very capable of learning.

Here's the deal. The unit came with a RAID card #295244-001 and no software at all of any sort. I have my Windows 2000 advanced server CD and Exchange CD at the ready for installation but the card mentioned does not yet see the five drives and thus I cannot proceed. If I repatch the cable, bypassing the card then the server is ready to begin the installation process. Is there something software-wise that I'm missing? Seems I need to do some basic CPU configuration prior to OS installation, right? Problem is, when I look at the software and drivers for this unit on this site, i don't even know where to begin! Can someone please point me in the right direction.

Many thanks!

Re: New user needs assistance!

Probably the eaisest thing to do is order the SmartStart 5.5 CD from HP, you can boot from this CD and it will walk you through an Assisted Install of the Operating system that you Pick. and will help you configure the hardware. http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/smartstart/subscription.html

From this site you can order a single copy of the CD's, you do not need to order the full subscription.

There is a later version of Smartstart avaialble (6.x) but I think that 5.5 will be easier for you to use.

Re: New user needs assistance!

Hi Carlos,
Here is somethings you can try.
Follow this link, here you find the System Erase utility. This will wipe out everything so you have a clean system to start. This will create a bootable floppy.
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/16251.html
Next would be to install the (F10 partition)System Configuration Utility. This is optional. We can access the F10 partition once you have the smart start cd. Here's the link anyway. 4 floppies will be needed. http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/13227.html
Next would be to get the Array Configuration utility to configure what type of RAID you desire.
This is an older version but it will create bootable floppies. SP6263
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/6001.html
After all this is done. We now need the driver for the 2DH. Here's the link:
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/15676.html
When Win2000 is loading please make sure to skip Mass Storage detection and specify. Load the driver for the 2DH and the driver for the CDROM.
Good luck or you can wait for the Smart Start cd. It will do all of this. Make sure to get 5.5 or earlier. The newest Smart Start will not work with your Server.

Re: New user needs assistance!

Thanks to everyone who replied to my initial email. The sever is now up and running and I was able to proceed with the rest of things (OS and Exchange software)

I have a new question which I will pose in a new question withing his forum. Your assistance was totally helpful!
