P222 or P421 Smart Array (Gen8) in a new Gen9 Proliant Server?
Need to know if the P222 or P421 SmartArray (for Gen8 servers) will work in the new Gen9 servers?
All that are listed in the Gen9 config guides are the new 12Gbps P240 and P441controllers, which are 12Gbps SAS and have backwards compatibility only reported for 6Gbps SAS devices. I can find nothing that says they'll work with 3Gbps SAS devices.
I have an MSL4048 tape library with Ultrium 1760 tape drives in it which only communicates at 3Gbps SAS speed and need to be able to connect this machine to a new Gen9 server which will be running Windows 2012.

Re: P222 or P421 Smart Array (Gen8) in a new Gen9 Proliant Server?
Hi,
Gen9 is compatible with 4th genenration of SmartArray controllers.
Gen8 was compatible with 2nd and 3rd generation of SmartArray controllers.

But my guess is that this compatibility is only for internal SAS hard drives within Gen9.
You may try P22 or P421 for connecting external storage devices but not the internal SAS drives in Gen9, but again its my guess, I have not tried this.
Thank You!
I am a HP employee.

Re: P222 or P421 Smart Array (Gen8) in a new Gen9 Proliant Server?
All SAS Controllers will step down in speed, 12gbps -> 6gbps -> 3gbps -> 1.5gbps - so use the newest hotness SmartArray for support and enjoy backwards compatibility!
