P410 with DL380 G5

Hi There,

Is there anyone who can point me to the right link in HP where a DL380 G5 is fully compatible with a P410 Smart Array Controller? I don't see any on HP Support site.

Please help.

Hi.

On the following link, you can the controllers available for DL380 G5 Server. Unfortunately, the P410 controller you are looking for is not supported.

Re: P410 with DL380 G5

Yes that's the problem, in the DL380 G5 specs it says it already supports 6G SAS, and the P400 SAS Controller the 6G SAS drives are mentioned as one of its options. But the problem is many tech folks told me in email that P400 still does not support 6G SAS. However, if you will check P400's specs in the Product Bulletin, you will find that one if its options included 6G SAS drives. Why would HP Product Bulletin team put that option of 6G SAS drive in there if our server and controller do not support 6G SAS drives.

Re: P410 with DL380 G5

Hi Bro, thanks for sharing those links but I did check on those earlier and that is why I found out such info. My real concern now in DL380 G5 is, can I plug in a P410 card that can support SAS 6G, or if not, can I use the P400 which is supported by DL380 G5 and can do 6G SAS drives (according to the specs of P400).

And why is it that P410 is not supported in DL380 G5 while P400 is. Or is it not yet supported by maybe it will later?

Re: P410 with DL380 G5

The DL380G6 has second generation PCI-e the G5 has first generation PCI-e. So the P410 won't reach it's full potential in a G5 server. 6G disks will work on a P400 but also won't reach their full potential.

Has anybody seen hard number of the actual performance difference between G6 and G3?
I think if your not using SSD the difference could very well be minimal.

Re: P410 with DL380 G5

Hi Wobbe,

Your info makes sense. I'll take this one as the nearest answer to my query so far.

So if that is the case that DL380 G5 is using PCI-E 1.0 and that 6G SAS can only run on a PCI-E 2.0, then HP specs team should remove the SAS 6G Hard drives as options on both DL380 G5 servers and P400 SA controller. Coz it just misleads the customer to buying an expensive 6G hard drive but it wont actually run at 6Gbit/sec when used in a DL380 G5 server.

It't confusing and maybe even misleading, but they make a future proof investment :-)
