I am running a Smart Array 4200 controller in my PL1600 (2x600) and cannot update the firmaware on the SA.
I can only guess that it's because I'm running the 64-bit card in a 32-bit slot - am I right?
When I try both offline and online updating I am presented with an error telling me there is no device present to update.
Please advise.

Solution
This controller doesn't have to be installed in a 64 Bit slot to update the firmware.
Are you getting an error stating there is no device present for both or just the offline? It's possible the online can fail if the current firmware is too old (it requires a min rev in order to use the online rom flash).
Does the controller show up during post? Which file are you attempting to use for the offline? I would recommend using the one from the options rompaq for array controllers:

The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..
