PL3000 - Hangs during Win2K setup

I am trying to rebuild a Proliant 3000 with Windows 2000 Server. Using SmartStart 5.5, I go through the assisted setup. Everything is fine until after Windows converts the disk from FAT to NTFS - when the GUI section of the setup starts, the keyboard and mouse hang.

There is an MS article relating to precisely this problem (Q249686), except that it is for servers running the System Config Utility earlier than v2.48 - I am running v2.58A, which I believe is the newest available for this server. I also double-checked the SysConfig utility for the settings mentioned in the article, but they are correct.

Any ideas? I'm tearing my hair out! I have also tried this with SmartStart 5.30, with the same result.

Which firmware version do you have on the server? Does the machine have an array controller installed or are you using the embedded scsi?
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..
