POST error 212, message "Processor 2 initialized at 00 MHz"

Proliant 1600, latest (11/08/2000) P08 BIOS
Two P-III 500 MHz CPUs, 2x 128M RAM

I've found this problem mentioned in this forum, but not with my circumstances.

I have a dual-processor cage that I know is good: I can put it in server A and server A sees and initializes both CPUs.

I put the cage in server B (also 11/08/2000 BIOS) and I see:

Processor 1 initialized at 500 MHz with 512 Kbyte Cache
Processor 2 initialized at 00 MHz
212-Processor 2 Failed

Prior to swapping cages I tried:

initial problem -- processor 2 fails
swap CPUs -- processor 2 still fails
swap VRMs -- processor 2 still fails

This told me that either CPU and either VRM will pass if it is CPU 1. I suspected the CPU or VRM connector. Inspection of CPU slot 2 and VRM slot 2 found no obvious flaws or contamination.

Move CPU cage into server A -- no CPU failure

Assuming the CPU cage is indeed okay, where do I look next to find what is causing CPU 2 to fail POST when this cage is installed in server B?

Hello James,
To correct this problem please run System Configuration if you have not run this already. Anyhow here is the link to download the latest System Configuration utility:

When you run this utility you will be advised that during the previous POST a CPU had failed has this been corrected. Just say Yes and you should be able to rectify this situation.
