Doing a remote update of a server, I got this error in the eventviewer of the upgraded server:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 9/26/2008
Time: 6:09:51 PM
User: N/A
Computer: XXXXXXXX
Description:
The hpsumserverw32 service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
---
I take a look in the service and I found that the service "hpsumserverw32" as a path to executable defined like this:
\hpsum_1222452579\hpsumserverw32.exe
Of course, the path is not good...why?!? Any solution on that?
Thanks!

Re: PSP 8.11 - hpsumserverw32 service failed to start
Yes, I use HPSUM (on my workstation) to do a remote update of my server and I got this error following the installation of the service.

Re: PSP 8.11 - hpsumserverw32 service failed to start
This error normally occurs if we do not have write access to the %SYSTEMROOT% directory (normally c:\windows). This can occur if the directory is read-only or the user you are using to log into the server doesn't have sufficient privileges to create a directory under the SYSTEMROOT.
If you can capture the files under %TEMP%\hp_sum directory on the workstation you are using, it might provide additional information. Zip them up and attach them and I'll take a look at them.

C:\WINDOWS\hpsum_1222784269>dir
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 2056-65A8
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\hpsum_1222784269

5 File(s) 2,144,717 bytes
2 Dir(s) 66,063,257,600 bytes free

And the service is always defined with a bad path "\hpsum_1222784269\hpsumserverw32.exe". No "C:\Windows"...strange...
I doesn't found any log files...any idea?

SolutionCan you look for the log files on the server where you are running HPSUM? Because the service (hpsumserverw32.exe) was not started, there won't be any logs created on the target side. The files on the system running HPSUM will be located in the %TEMP%\hp_sum directory.
One possible cause of the service failing on the remote side would be a blocked firewall port or that the target server was running Windows 2000 or NT4. HPSUM requires ports in the range of 61000-61007 open on the target side so a reply can be sent back to the system running HPSUM to establish the installation session.
We can't support Windows 2000 targets because of compatibility library issues.
If you can give me more details on what OS is running on the failing target and the type of server, it would also help me debug the issue.
Thanks,
Michael

Re: PSP 8.11 - hpsumserverw32 service failed to start
I will take a look on our firewall, I'm sure that those ports are not open.
Thanks a lot! ;-)

Re: PSP 8.11 - hpsumserverw32 service failed to start
The Service exectutable is shown in SCM as "\hpsum_1231420284\hpsumserverw32.exe" but should be %systemrrot%\hpsum_1231420284\hpsumserverw32.exe or c:\winnt\hpsum_1231420284\hpsumserverw32.exe.
Therefor the service cannot start.
The servers have been upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003 (latest SP & Updates) and have a systemroot of c:\winnt.
C:\WINNT\hpsum_1231420284 is created and contains:
- hpsumserverw32.exe
- Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest
- msvcm80.dll
- msvcp80.dll
- msvcr80.dll
Environment Variable SystemRoot=C:\WINNT
