Pavillion Touchpad Scrolling Inconsistent

I was having problems with "randon text selection" when using the touchpad on my Pavillion zt3010. I updtated the touchpad driver as recommended by several people, but now I'm having a different problem.

The scrolling in some applications works normally, that is, it had the effect of scrolling up or down a few lines at a time.

But in many other applications, it appears to "grab" the "elevator bar" on the right-hand side of the window and drag it up or down. I mean, the pointer actually moves to the side of the window and returns to its original location when scrolling is completed

This is not nearly as smooth or pedictable as the first method. I tried to find some setting in the Synaptic driver that would address this, but I didn't see anything.
