Performance of RAID 1 on HP H240 HBA Controller

Hi HPE experts,

Very complex hierarchy, however I would first like to know if I am posting in the right Forum on HP H240 HBA Controller on a Proliant ML 150 Gen 9 Server. Please advise if I am not.

I have been testing using software RAID 1 on Windows Server 2012 R2 64bit to mirror a 4TB SAS drive.

The hard disk installed was 2 x 4TB SAS Drive under GPT.

It took me almost 7 ~ 8 days to have the RAID 1 process completed in Windows Server 2012 R2 64bit.

Previously when usign 2TB SAS drive on most Proliant ML Servers under MBR, it took from 1 to 2 days for RAID 1 process to complete under Windows Server 2003 R2 through Windows Server 2008 R2.

Today I create an online check with HP Support for this HP Proliant ML 150 Gen9 regarding this matter.

I am shock to hear from the online chat support expert that the RAID process on HP H240 HBA take 15mins per Gigabyte for rebuild or array expansion.

This mean that 4TB will require 60,000mins to rebuild, equivalent to almost 41 ~ 42 days.

In this case, why should I use hardware RAID since Software RAID performance is much faster?

1.  Software RAID under Windows Server 2012R2 64bit = 7~8 days

2. HP H240 HBA = 41~42 days for RAID 1 rebuild or arrayt expansion.

Can anyone please advise?

I sincerely thank you in advance.

Regards

Alvyn

Re: Performance of RAID 1 on HP H240 HBA Controller

The H240 Smart Host Bus Adapter is primarily an HBA that provides a simple RAID mode. Unlike the HP Smart Array Controllers, the H240 does not offer any acceleration and does not support cache modules. You should look at something like the Smart Array P440 controller
