Porliant 3000 Dual PII-450 Mhz

Hi there!

I recently bought a Compaq Porliant 3000 with Dual 450 Mhz (SL2U7). Can I upgrade the CPU's to for example 2 PIII-600 Mhz (SL3JM).

Planing to run RedHat based server on this server, I would appriciate if anyone drops me afew lines if there is anything I should think of before I start installing the server. ;-)

Thanx in advance for all ideas & suggestions.

You can go up to dual PIII-650 processors.

Make sure you upgrade the system ROM to rhe latest version which is at http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/13949.html

Re: Porliant 3000 Dual PII-450 Mhz

Hi,

Please be aware that from 500Mhz and above CPU's, the Processor Power Module also changes. The old Compaq spare part number (450Mhz)is 327660-001 and the new one is 329267-001. If you plan to replace both CPU's you will require the matching PPM's.
Please check your current PPM's. There will be a sticker on them stating "Use Compaq spare part number XXXXXX-XXX".

Please note these are Compaq SPARE PART numbers.

Hope this helps

Brian

Check your CPU slots. Make sure the 450MHz are Pentium III and not Pentium II. If it is Pentium II, then you will need to replace your system board in addition to the CPUs list earlier. I do not know what that part number would be. If replacing the system board is not an option, you will be limited to the dual PII/450 you already have.

Re: Porliant 3000 Dual PII-450 Mhz

Neal, that is incorrect. There were only two revisions of the ProLiant 3000 systemboard.

The first version used PII-260 to PII-330 processors, each processor and its VRM was on its own board and these processor boards were plugged into the system board.

The second version has the CPU and VRM sockets right on the system board. This version will accommodate CPU-s from 400 to 650 MHz, but the VRM-s must be correctly matched to the CPU.

Re: Porliant 3000 Dual PII-450 Mhz

Frank, you are correct! My misunderstanding. I forgot that the Pentium II and Pentium III share the same slot type. It was late when I posted that message.

See below for part numbers and thermal kit part numbers:
6/600 Pentium III 512K Processor Option Kit 153555-B21
6/550 Pentium III 512K Processor Option Kit 124779-B21
6/500 Pentium III 512K Processor Option Kit 401268-B21
6/450 Pentium II 512K Processor Option Kit 313618-B21
6/400 Pentium II 512K Processor Option Kit 313612-B21
6/350 Pentium II 512K Processor Option Kit 313611-B21
Note: To Upgrade 400-MHZ, 450-MHz, or 500-MHZ models to the 550-MHz or 600-MHz or when upgrading a 550-MHz to the 600-MHz model, installation of an additional Thermal Upgrade Option Kit (144003-B22) is required. Failure to install this kit when upgrading may cause damage to the server and will void the warranty.

Good luck!
