Power Supply Failures

Power Supply Failures

I have four brand new servers and three of the four power supplies have already failed. Is this just a coincidence or is there a known issue with power supplies in ML350's?

Re: Power Supply Failures

I had the same problem with two ML350s in the past few months. We have another four servers running, hopefully power supplies will also keep running because I don't want to be in the firing line again.

Re: Power Supply Failures

I spoke too soon. Another power supply has gone down. There is definitely a problem with ML350 power supplies but of course Compaq will not admit it.

Re: Power Supply Failures

I have 2 ML350s w/ bad power supplies. When I called Tech. Svcs. they recommended that I check the system ROM and make sure that the server was using a UPC. Does Compaq monitor this forum for trends? Please post if you receive any other suggestions.

Re: Power Supply Failures

WOW, I'm glad that I'm not the only one out there! All of my Compaq's are on AC UPS 1000 or above. Our compaq technician checked the ROM and said everything looked OK. I have ordered a spare for the four and final ML350 due to constant back-order of these power supply units. I would suggest the same for everyone else as well.

Note: Our Compaq technician has mentioned that this issue has also occurred numerously in the ML530's as well which I have two of. Any prayers are welcome! :-)

Re: Power Supply Failures

I also had the same experience with a bad power supply. It went down after 2 months. However the Compaq replaced it the same day, but I did not know that this is now a known bug. I have installed another ML350 2 days ago, I hope that this will keep up and running.

Re: Power Supply Failures

We ordered 120 of these ML350 Servers last year. Having installed 5 and 3 PSU's dying we spoke to Compaq who admitted that there is a known problem on a paticular batch of PSU's. All 120 servers have now had the PSU replaced under warranty even though they have not all failed yet.

Re: Power Supply Failures

Were the Compaq people decent about replacing them? Of course with 120 I can see why, but what about a piddly little 7,500 student school district. Have they stated anywhere in any documentation of this issue with the PSU's? I sure as hec hope so!

Re: Power Supply Failures

Alot of our customers (don't ask why) bought these babies (no pun intended). Of course the power supplies die and they wonder why. I don't think the ml350 has quality hardware in it. The power supply is smaller than what I'm using in my home PC.

Re: Power Supply Failures

01 Feb 2001.

Good Evening All,

To get the facts right as of date :
- check the power supply revision -
there is a label on the power supply (some of you may have to remove the
power supply to read the label) that shows the revision code (REV 0?)
- the revision code should read '0' (zero) followed by either a number or an
alphabet. I could not differentiate between the number 1 and alphabet i.
- if the alphabets are F, G, H or I, then you probably have an "affected" power
supply (do not read 'defective')
- the power supplies that are not in the "affected" list should/must read revision
02 (zero two) or higher.

The above information is from 'Compaq'. I have found their 'Support Centre' to
be very helpful, have you guys/gals tried the same?

I hope the above info is of assistance.

Best of Luck ! :)

Re: Power Supply Failures

Correct - there are some earlier power supplies that have been failing a bit more than normal. It's best to call this issue into support and confirm what power supply you have. They can then arrange a replacment right there - if needed.

Re: Power Supply Failures

I've got a blown Rev. 02 here. It took a bit longer than the other PUS that was a Rev. 0G.

Re: Power Supply Failures

In response to Ron G (Compaq). These PSU's failing a "bit" more than usual. This appears to underestimate the situation. 100% of the ML350 servers we have purchased have failed within 2 months. In all cases the PSU gave up. In one case with an explosion loud enough to heard throughout the building. Compaq engineers appear to be unware of the seriousness of this problem. In one instance replacement PSU's blew immediately. The fourth PSU eventually held stable. (But for how long?) I work for a company supporting a number of different customers who are now asking us how we can prevent a recurrence of the situation. In all cases the servers were down for at least 12 hours resulting in much gnashing of teeth.
Will Compaq resolve this situation and start dishing out helpful advice to pass onto customers, or heaven forbid "compensation".

Re: Power Supply Failures

I also had the same problem with more bad power supplies. It went down after 1 months and after three daily. COMPAQ relaced it, but the problem is same. In addition in the server are two EICON ISDN cards - because of RAS -, which have consumption ~8A!
Can somebody help me?

Re: Power Supply Failures

Make sure to replace the power supply with SPS# 163346-001 of rev 5 or 5P.

Re: Power Supply Failures

Our ML350 PSU started failing intermittently yesterday, our Compaq dealer would not ship us the replacement PSU until we had run the diagnostics... which wasted a day!!! We are paying for priority postage $85 and for engineers time at $160/hr (not allowed to do it ourselves) to fit it over the weekend. It is Revision 0I or 01, had I known it was a defective, I mean affected part I may have replaced it beforehand, or at least had a spare on hand.

Yes, my power supply has also gone down.

Re: Power Supply Failures

I am having problems also. We have 40 servers. Within 4 months 7 power supplies failed. Compaq sent me replacement rev 5 supplies. All my supplies were Rev 1 or lower. Since the new supplies have gone in we have had 2 more fail. My customer is not happy. I hope this can be resolved soon.

Re: Power Supply Failures

This is no coincidence. We are running 60 ML350's and over the last year have lost more than half the power supplies. Once this became an issue Compaq replaced all the power supplies in the remaining servers. This has unfortunatly not fixed the problem and we have had four more die in the last month. We now keep a stock of spares so we can get our sites up quicker and would suggest you do the same.

Re: Power Supply Failures

Well, it happened again. ML350 PSU blew up after 8 months this time with my 2nd server. Just to let Compaq know that there are still problems with this server.

Re: Power Supply Failures

We have about 20 ML350s and one is giving us power problems. The PSU was replaced last week but did not fix the problem. Today the Compaq Techos are replacing the motherboard.

Re: Power Supply Failures

Okay, one of the technos will speak: There is a higher than normal failure rate on PSU's (how to deny?), however Compaq has ordered the PSU-manufacturer to re-design their PSU so it can cope with the ML350-load better. My company as ASP has replaced hundreds of PSU's and the new ones have never failed (give or take one or two that had a power surge). What double problem was/is that spare part PSU's were not available when the first PSU's failed and worldwide ASP's used new servers to help their clients. Those new servers of course had the same problem with their PSU so these PSU's again failed giving clients the idea that their ML350 was a crappy server. And as a service professional I can guaranty to each and every one of you: ML350's to my knowledge are the best servers Compaq has made in a long time.

Kind regards
