Power modules failing frequently.

Hi

we have 3 HP prolient DL380 G5 servers all are connected to an 8

KvA APC Online UPS

SERVER NAME S/N P/N

APPS CZC7040FQ4 417455-421

BDC CZC7040FPW 417455-421

PDC CZC7040FQB 417455-421

The servers with serial no CZC7040FPW and CZC7040FQB (BDC and

PDC)the redundent powersupply is failing unexpectedly with in a

short period.

Now in each servers the power supply modules failed 2 times

and we replaced with correct replacement part. I couldnt find

any issue with APC UPS with an output volt of 230 1 Phase

constant.

How i can diagnose the problem which cause damage of power

supply module ...

pls help us

Re: Power modules failing frequently.

Hello Suman,

The bad one have Partnumber
P/N: 379123-001 REV 03M (without green Point)

following Partnumbers are ok
- P/N: 379123-001 REV 03M (with a green Point)
- P/N: 379123-001 REV 04M (with or without green Point)
- P/N: 379124-001 (alle Revisions)

Once you replace the PSU, make sure of the part #;

Other than that, Make sure you have the LATEST firmware, PSP etc... just for maintenance.

Re: Power modules failing frequently.

Thanks for your Quick response
I found it on one of my power supply. as i said earlier i faced 5 PS failure in 2 servers
the replaced PS has the following PN
1. 379124-001 REV B (No Green/ yellow dot)
2. 379123-001 REV 03M (With Green Point)2 nos
3. 379123-001 REV 06M No dots -2 nos

Pls tell me the reliability of the above mentioned products which we got as replacement fron HP

Re: Power modules failing frequently.

Sumanlal,

There is no PROACTIVE replacement of the PSU's with older versions.... by HP.

Hence, once PSU fails, HP support will replace it with the Correct ones.

Regarding the PSU overheat, check cooling options in the server room.
Also make sure the servers are running on the latest PSP ... PSP 7.9

Re: Power modules failing frequently.

Hi.

Usually with PSU's its either a heat problem or a current problem. The HP PSU's usually complain about over and under voltage conditions, but I'm not sure about the frequency. In Ghana like nearly everywhere else its 50Hz, but it may be something worth checking. If the problem persists it might be worth swapping the power feeds and seeing if the problem moves with the feed. That would indicate that perhaps you UPS isn't as well behaved as it should be.

Lastly is your UPS an inline or switching UPS. Essentially what I'm asking is whether your power is coming from the UPS or does it switch between mains power and UPS using smoothing capacitors. Inline UPS's are better because you are always running off the UPS and they act as better filters of the input power feed because the charging circuitry is better seperated from the outgoing power. Switching UPS's are cheaper but you are often more vulnerable to power fluctuations from a "dirty" mains feed.
