ProLiant 1600 Dual 500MHZ Wont Reboot

Ok, i have a dual 500mhz P3 1600, it boots OK after a power cycle, but if i do a soft reboot EG: restart command from Linux the IMD gets as far as the Video part and stops, for a long while when i restarted the server soft or hard the Compaq Proliant logo and the output from the OS would show in black and white, so i installed a PCI video card and that has atleast given me color. but system still hangs on reboot. any suggestions appreciated

Geraint:

What is the date of the bios installed on your server? This should say:
P08 (insert date here)

There were some issues with multiple video cards installed on the 1600 with a previous bios. make sure are up to bios (dated 11/08/2000):

Are you using a SmartArray Controller in the server? What model and bios revision?

Also, make sure the System Configuration settings are set for the correct boot controller order, boot device order and that your O/S selection is set for Linux/UNIX.
Enjoy!

I have the latest BIOS installed and have set the Smart Start stuff to Unix/Linux, its as if the Vidoe subsystem is broken

I Have no Smart Array controller installed

The server used to have Win2k installed and that would show in color with the on-board device also grub would display in color with the on board adapter but after that syslog would be black and white, so i have it down to a damaged on board VGA adapter, but is it possible to completely disable it

Re: ProLiant 1600 Dual 500MHZ Wont Reboot

You can disable the video with the system board SW1 switch number 1.
Here is the ProLiant 1600 (PIII) Maintenance and Service Guide:
http://h200002.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/UCR/SupportManual/TPM_179480-001_rev3_us/TPM_179480-001_rev3_us.pdf

I am not sure if it "completely" disables it or if it just "allows" the server to use a PCI based video device.
Enjoy!

Have you run the diagnostics against this server to see if any of the hardware has a logic error (such as the video)?
Run the diags from your Smart Start CD or from the diskette version here:

Let me know what you find? -john
