ProLiant 3000 Dual CPU Problem

Here is the scenario:
Proliant 3000 with dual PII 300 CPU's in a GEN 1 system board (takes small
motherboards with Slot 1 processors as opposed to the processors fitting
into the system board itself). I bought it new with a single CPU and ran NT
4.0. Several years later I bought another CPU card and VRM from Compaq and
installed it no problem. Upgraded to multiprocessor kernel and worked fine.
A few months ago I pulled the system apart and upgraded the ram. I got an
error that Processor 2 failed. I pulled out the processor and reseated it.
Went into the SCU and told it the processor was changed and then it worked
fine again.

This year I decided to upgrade to W2K server. Installation went fine but
during the first reboot, it died saying multiprocessors not supported.
Apparently W2K is fussier about matched stepping than NT. I replaced the
CPU with one of the same stepping. Now I constantly get a Processor 2
failed. I go into the SCU, tell it the processor was changed and reboot.
Still says the Processor 2 fails. Now I still hung onto the terminator
board you need with only one processor. If I use it in either slot, and
either processor in the other slot, it boots fine. So in other words, no
matter what configuration I use as single processor, its great but still
refuses to use the second one.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this? Or is something gone wrong with my
system board?

Thanks in advance
Charles

Re: ProLiant 3000 Dual CPU Problem

We had the same problem. Pull out the hard drives and do a system erase.

Put the drives back and allow the system to re-configure itself.

This fixed the problem for us.

Re: ProLiant 3000 Dual CPU Problem

Frank,

Thanks I will give that a shot today. I did a system erase (several of them actually) but never removed the drives. Is there a particular reason I need to remove the drives or just some funny problem with the CPU's and how it's set up?

Re: ProLiant 3000 Dual CPU Problem

It is prudent to remove the drives from an operating server before doing a system erase, so the O/S and the data gets preserved.

Re: ProLiant 3000 Dual CPU Problem

No luck. Same problem, even when I go into the SCU and tell it the CPU has been replaced, it still fails. I have tried just running on ONe CPU in either slot and it works fine. so I know its not the VRM or the CPU's themselves. If is was the system board, then one of the slots would fail, atleast That is what I assume would happen. I have run out of ideas.

Re: ProLiant 3000 Dual CPU Problem

Have you tried going into W2K and upgrading the HAL when you had both processors in? Or did W2K pick up both processors when you upgraded from NT4 to W2K?

Re: ProLiant 3000 Dual CPU Problem

Are you running the latest SystemROM? Even if it is up to date, you should make sure you update it, just incase there are some issues there. Also, in the SCU have you configured win2k as your OS?

Could tryied this.

Best of luck
