ProLiant 5500 Pentium Pro won't Power Up

I am trying to get an (old!) ProLiant 5500 with a single Pentium Pro 200 to power up for the first time in my possession, but it refuses!

There are 5 LEDs on the CPU card, and 3 LEDs (BRD TMP, IERR & THRMTRIP) flash about every 10 seconds. When this happens, the fans all try to start for a split second. The other 2 LEDs (P1 VCCP & P2 VCCP) remain OFF.

My experience with XEON-equiped 5500's isn't much use here, because the LEDs indicating a fault are quite different.

Can anyone suggest ANYTHING I could try (or read) to get it going?

Thanks in advance, Wesley.

Wesley:

Do you have both power supplies installed in this server or just one? This could be a weak P/S.

Make sure the processor and the second processor slot terminator are seated well.
Enjoy!

Re: ProLiant 5500 Pentium Pro won't Power Up

I have 2 power supplies that have been in a ProLiant 5500 with 4 Xeon P3's, so this doesn't seem to be the problem.

The 2 Dual-Processor boards are seated correctly (Or at least as far in as they will go).

However, I have found some LEDs on the Motherboard. Can anyone tell me what they are for? They aren't glowing at the moment.

Re: ProLiant 5500 Pentium Pro won't Power Up

There is an interlock switch that needs to be fully depressed to activate. Check that this switch is not loose from the chassis or that the plastic tab on that switch is not broken. of course check the leads from the interlock are not loose...

Re: ProLiant 5500 Pentium Pro won't Power Up

There are in fact TWO interlock switches!

One is for the SIDE panel (Nearest the CPUs and DIMM slots. The other is for the TOP panel.

I had BOTH off, so I could get to everything! So, now I have 2 interlock bypass devices installed, and the box powers up just fine!!!

Thanks for the information and solution John.
