I have a G3 server with 3 72.8GIG HDD configured with raid5. I have 3 available slots. Can I purchase 3 more 146.8GIG HDD and create an additional logical drive using the same smart array 5i controller?

yes for sure you can get 3 more HDDs and get them work in the other bays
check this, pages 100, 100 it says 5i will support up to 6 HDDs
