ProLiant DL380 G6 becomes unresponsive

Hello,

I have a system running Windows Server 2003 R2 SP3. This problem I am having is random, it occurs about every week, and sometimes not for months at a time. This system becomes unresponsive to RDP, although I am able to ping the system. A local (directly attached) KVM shows a grey screen. While on the local console, I am able to move the cursor around, but all that is observed is a grey screen traditionally seen behind the control alt delete prompt, seen here http://i42.tinypic.com/346nlld.jpg. The event viewer has a lot (15+) of the same 'warning' entry just before it becomes unresponsive, seen here http://i41.tinypic.com/imq746.jpg. I have found another HP forum entry about the Source: HpCISSs, found here http://tinyurl.com/y8dtpbs. However, it seems to be unrelated as the HP Support Document c00810284 says it "...can be safely ignore", found here http://tinyurl.com/24qlrj.

In the issue's last occurrence, at 6:35 PM, after rebooting rebooting at 7:50 PM and finding all the warning events mentioned above, there was also an Error Event, seen here http://i44.tinypic.com/263jzwh.jpg. The Error event was written post reboot, but you can see in the description it occurred at 6:31:42 PM. I am pretty sure this is related as it occurred ~3min before 6:35 PM (when I became aware of the issue).

A little background, the system runs an application that leverages apache on port 80. I have alerts setup so that if a connection is unable to be established on port 80 for more than 60 seconds, I get an e-mail. This is how I became aware of the issues last occurrence at 6:35 PM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: ProLiant DL380 G6 becomes unresponsive

Based on this, found here http://tinyurl.com/yz9jez4.

For now, based on this, http://tinyurl.com/yz9jez4, I have upgraded the controller's firmware from Version: 1.66 (4 Jun 2009) to Version: 2.74 (8 Jan 2010). The integrated p410i storage controller has already been replaced once because of a different non-related DOA issue last year. If the issue continues, I will have HP send a replacement.

The system is back up and running, however, rebooting was the remedy before the controller's firmware upgrade. That said, I am unsure if the problem is fixed.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Hi Joey,

I have the same problem on DL380 G6. I am planning to run a firmware update and was wondering if your issue ever occurred again.

Thanks

Hi all! I have the same problem with DL380 G6 and G5 with SUSE 10 sp2. Have you resolved the issue? How? Thanks in advance.

Re: ProLiant DL380 G6 becomes unresponsive

The problem was with the storage controller's cache module. Having replaced it 03/19/10, the issue has only happend 2x more. In hopes of remedying these few remaining occurrences, I plan on upgrading the P410i firmware to 3.50 (released 08/19/10). The firmware specifically "Fixed an issue where an OS would hang during heavy IO loads and drive rebuilds.".

Upgrade the P410i to firmware 3.52 released 13 Oct 2010. Upgrade also all SAS HDDs firmware.
