ProLiant DL380e Gen8 - Critical Temperature Threshold Exceeded (Temperature Sensor 46, Location Stor

Hello all,

Need help dl380e gen8 giving me some issues. was hoping someone might have an idea. (Since its out of warranty.)

I have DL380e LFF with a 2slot read drive cage. couple times a day it gives me an error and reboots. Critical Temperature Threshold Exceeded (Temperature Sensor 46, Location Storage, Temperature 89C)

Been lookign for a couple months. I can't find anything to tell me where sensor 46 is. I believe is it on the rear facing 2 bay drive cage. If I disconnect the cables going to that circuit board, I no longer get the temp error. But i would like to use these 2 drive slots.

I would buy a new circuit board, but everywhere i can find, it comes int he whole kit. Wanting more then the server is worth.

Thanks for any help.

Lou

ILO will show you where that sensor is, even the free version. Under health, temperature.

I have a DL360e G8 that runs the on board disk controller so hot the machine has even shut down because of it. It's frustrating because I'm not even using the on board controller, instead using a raid card in the expansion bay.

Dunno if that is what's affecting your G8 or not.

Re: ProLiant DL380e Gen8 - Critical Temperature Threshold Exceeded (Temperature Sensor 46, Location

I have been viewing the system information - temperatures. The sensor # is not list under sensor data. I've cuscored over all the dots on the graph also. None of them lists a sensor 46. Seems to skip the sensors number causing my issue. (below is a copy of my sensor data sensors)

The only place i can find reference is in the Integrated Management Log

196 Environment 12/10/2017 06:40 12/10/2017 06:40 1 Critical Temperature Threshold Exceeded (Temperature Sensor 46, Location Storage, Temperature 89C)

I've upgrade to the lastest ILO firmware also and everything else i could find to update. Even swapped power supplies with another server.

E.g. of my sensor data.

Re: ProLiant DL380e Gen8 - Critical Temperature Threshold Exceeded (Temperature Sensor 46, Location

Old thread, new problem for me.

Trying to bring back to life a DL380e Gen 8:

  • System ROM P73 12/20/2013
  • iLO Firmware Version 2.70 May 07 2019

Booting from the motherboard SATA ports to a SSD drive.

Upgraded all firmware I could find and still getting frequent reboots. Noticed this error every time there is a reboot: Critical Temperature Threshold Exceeded (Temperature Sensor 47, Location Storage, Temperature 96C). Some times says sensor 46.

In my blade there are no sensors 46 and/or 47 installed. It shows as not installed and are not reporting temps. Maybe those sensors are in the raid controller that I just removed for testing and connected the back plane to a LSI 9211 in IT mode..

Also changed the cooling settings from Optimal to Increased.

As tests continue, would like to know if someone run into this scenario and has be able to resolve it.

Regards!

Which model SSD are you working with? There's something about the way that many SATA drives report their temperature that these Proliant servers do not like and do not handle gracefully.

Thanks for your reply.

I'd changed some configuration based on your question. I'm now booting from the MB SATA port to:

smartctl 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [FreeBSD 11.2-STABLE amd64] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-17, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===
Model Family: Toshiba 2.5" HDD MQ01ABF...
Device Model: TOSHIBA MQ01ABF050
Serial Number: 46QCCY76T

The blade has its B320i re-installed and connected to the backplane. All temps inside threshold and fans at 23% ...

Will let it run for a couple days and see if will reboot. The final goal is to have it connected to a HBA in IT mode.

It didn't take couple days ...
