ProLiant ML350 G5 and modemfax

we are having troubles on an ML350 with GNU/Linux. Currently we are sending faxes using hylafax and a multimodem MT5656ZDX connected to the serial port.

The problem is that after sending and receiving a few faxes, all communication between server and modem are blocked and ends with a TIMEOUT error. The only solution is to reboot the server and unplug its power cable.

On smaller ML machines, we found that the serial port is not reliable and we had to se an USB/serial adapter. That configuration worked perfectly.

Do you have any suggestion about this? Is the serial port on ML350 really poor?

Can't answer the question directly. but we use the Lantronix MSS100 (I think that's the device) devices to connect serial devices via the LAN to our servers.

This has the advantage of not being strictly tied to a single physical server.
The product comes with software that allows you to redirect the COM port to the IP Port. Our prog'ers coded to use the IP Address directly rather than the COM port - less issues.

Hi Rob,
thanks for you reply. I also checked that we faced the same problem on a ML370. Again, we solved it using an USB to serial converter.

About your proposal, we cannot change the behavior of hylafax, so we need a real serial device to talk to.
