Problem accesing large numbers of files. ML370 G2 1.6GHz

Hi all,

Situation.........
Compaq ML370 G1 600MHz & ML370 G2 1.6GHz
Win 2K Server, SP4 fully patched. Running on the Dec 03 Compaq ML370 Support Pack.

A certain piece of software we use puts 15,000 data files into a folder. The total size of this folder is 60MB
When using Windows Explorer to view this folder it can take upto 4 minutes for the contents to appear.

When this software is used on a Cheapo PC with the same configuration files can be viewed within 2 seconds. Thus indicating a file access problem on the Compaq 5i controller / or disks.

Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Hello Paul,
You have mentioned that you're fully uptodate on the W2K patches n stuff. How about the firmware of 5i controller as well as the system bios??

Re: Problem accesing large numbers of files. ML370 G2 1.6GHz

Well i upgraded the Firmare on the 5i a few days ago, but that did not help.

I have not touched the System BIOS.
Does the ML Support Pack not upgrade the BIOS as well as all the Drivers ???

Hello Paul,
No the support pack does not upgrade the system BIOS. However, here is the link and it's an online version which should not take more than a couple of minutes:

Re: Problem accesing large numbers of files. ML370 G2 1.6GHz

Hi again all,

Well i am still here with the same issue. Compaq Support have not even got back to me, which is terrible.....

I am experimenting on the older ML370 G1 600mhz at the moment, with the integrated Raid controller. As i am experimenting the Server only has 1 disk (9GB) configured as RAID 0.
Fresh Compaq Smart Start install of Windows 2000 server. Patched upto SP4. Installed the Dec edition of the Compaq ML support pack. Motherboard BIOS and RAID have the latest Firmware.

And yet i Create a folder, insert 15,000 files. Totalling 60MB onto Drive C.

Open Windows explorer, go to that folder, and it takes almost 4 minutes to appear !!.
I just dont get it.

Even on my Toshiba laptop, the same folder , or even larger with 20,000 files contained in 1 folder can be displayed in less than 3 seconds.

Someone else must have experianced this issue before. It also happens on my ML370 G2's 1.6GHZ PIII's.

HELP !!!!

Re: Problem accesing large numbers of files. ML370 G2 1.6GHz

Hi

we had some problem with the CD device on ML370 G2...it made the computer freez from time to time for a few seconds...!

try to remove it.. maybe..

also check your smart array controller for cache configurations..maybe there is no cache assigned for Read...

also check if acceleration is enabled..

also check to see that windows explorer is not set to display in a web style format.

if i will think/remember anythins else i will post..

Re: Problem accesing large numbers of files. ML370 G2 1.6GHz

Have checked to other things which can influence this behaviour ?

Virusscanners, Quota Tools, Defragmentation,
View Setting of the Windows Explorer (list, details, icons ...)
Is the file type associated with a program ?
Do you have the same operation System on your laptop, pc and server ?
Enable view hidden files, are their files like folder.htt or .dat files ?
What is the performance setting on the server ? Background processes or forground processes ?
As you can see it dont believe that this is a hardware issue.

Regards.
