The first is a DL380 G3 with 2 CPUs (3.2GHz 1MB cache)
The second is a DL380 G4 with 1 CPU (3.4GHz 2MB cache).
The G3 will run with one or two of either kind of processor but the G4 will only run with 1 CPU and that's only if I use the original PPM module that it came with. Otherwise it will not POST.
Does anyone know why would I be able to use any combination of CPUs with the G3 and not the G4?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

SolutionBuddy part no for PPM
DL380 G3 is 289564-001
DL380 G4 is 347884-001
Which i think manufacturers are different so thats 1 point
2nd is need to follow some guidelines when we mixing procs as follows :
1.System bios should me msot latest
2.Procs Steppings shuld be same
3.Lowest stepping proc should be installed as the bootstrap processor (processor slot 1).
Cheers :)

G4 supports only 800MHz FSB
G3 supports both 400Mhz and 533Mhz FSB
800Mhz FSB == 2 x 400Mhz FSB :)
Thanks

Re: Problem adding 2nd CPU to DL380 G4
It's hard to admit this but my problem was that I was leaving the riser board off, and the machine just wouldn't boot without it.
What really set me back was I just recently read a review on anandtech where they not only took the riser board out but they plugged a video card in the then empty PCIe slot. http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3092&p=4
Anyhow, it's all a bit embarrassing but thanks for the quick responses.
