Re: Processor Upgrade for PL1600 6/350
What do you think:
2x 401268-B21 (PIII 500mhz 512 option kit)
Proc kits should include power modules
No Thermal kit required
No I/O board required
Set Jumper settings to 100/500 (chart above)
Install HAL as indicated above
That might be the best/easiest route
I really don't understand the I/O board issue. From the jumper settngs above, it looks like all procs above 333 run on the 100mhz bus, which would indicate no difference between the I/O boards. Maybe I'll pull apart the server and see what part number is on the I/O and go from there.
Now, off to read those documents you have provided.
Thanks.

Re: Processor Upgrade for PL1600 6/350
You WILL need the thermal kit! Without it, this will be a short lived solution. LOL
So here is your parts list:
1 x Thermal Kit: 144003-B22 (may need to order this as a Spare Part)
2 x PPM: - 329267-001
2 x 550MHz Processors: - 114525-001
No I/O cage needed.
Good?
Bios update after the upgrade is complete...
Hope this helps you! -john

Re: Processor Upgrade for PL1600 6/350
I must admit I am a little confused why the I/O cage would accept a 500mhz PIII (401268-B21) and not a 550mhz PIII (124779-B21) or a 600mhz PIII (153555-B21). Was the PII available in 500mhz?

SolutionThe I/O cage has the voltage selection on it. When you move up to a 550MHz you change voltage from that of the 500MHz and lower processors. And, according to HP, when you move to the 600MHz the voltage is different from the 350-500 as well as the 550. Thus, they sell 3 different cages.
Whew... a lot said there.
The list I did above is for the Spare part Numbers. You are not likely to find a vendor who can get these as Option Parts (parts ending in XXXXXX-B21 which would be cheaper) So you are likely going to have to use the Spare part Numbers (parts ending in XXXXXX-001) to order this upgrade:
1 x Thermal Upgrade Kit: 161144-001
2 x PPM: - 329267-001
2 x 500MHz Processors: - 114525-001
This is the list of items you need to buy.
Then the HAL and re-patch your O/S.
Then the Bios update, if necessary.
Good?

Re: Processor Upgrade for PL1600 6/350
Now you just have to find some of that end of year money hiding in the budget to buy the parts! ;-)
G'luck! I am glad I could help you. -john
