Proliant 150 ML G2 and VT support

Hi,
I have a 150ML G2 server with 2 Xeon CPU 3.00GHz; I installed successfully a Linux 64bit and VMWare server 2.0.1 (also 64bit version).
I would like to know if with this hardware I can run a 64 bit guest O.S.: as far I understand, VMWare server require (to accomplish this) a 64bit CPU (and this is fulfilled) and an Intel VT enabled processor.

I checked in the server BIOS, but I did not find any VT enable/disable option. The only CPU options I was able to find is about Hyperthreading.

Is this model/CPU VT enabled ?
( I found this link http://ark.intel.com/VTList.aspx interesting, but which XEON model has this G2 server? (i.e. 5030 / 5050 / 5060 / 5063 / 5080 etc...)

Is there any BIOS upgrade that could help ?

Is there any success story running 64bit guest on this hardware as host ?

Thanks in advance
Roberto

Re: Proliant 150 ML G2 and VT support

Hi Mark,
thanks for the answer;
in the link you gave me I actually did not find a ML 150 G2 version; also I was not able to find pertaining info on my question (the list report only win2008 support; or maybe I missed some important point in your link).

What I am looking looking for is to find my Xeon CPU features to support a VMware 64 bit guest.
I would like to know which is the XEON CPU model on this server ?
or better, my XEON CPU model does support Intel hardware virtualization (VT) ?

Thank again,
Roberto

Re: Proliant 150 ML G2 and VT support

The Xeon processor on ML150 G2 is Xeon DP which supports Hyper-Threading and Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T). There is no model number for it as there are in 5000,3000 and 7000 series.

Xeon DP doesn't support Intel VT technology. The processors which supports VT was added in G6 series of the Proliant servers. In this model series, it's in ML150 G6.

Re: Proliant 150 ML G2 and VT support

Wanted to add this to my previous post.

The Intel® Processor Identification Utility and Processor Spec Finder are available at the following website besides other Xeon processor related documentation.

Re: Proliant 150 ML G2 and VT support

The CPU int he ML150 G2 does not offer VT support

THe VMware certification list does not show the ML150 G2 as a supported platform for VMware 3.x or 2.x

Re: Proliant 150 ML G2 and VT support

Sameer, Jimmy
thank you for the info;

Sameer, I will try to run the Intel utility just to get the exact CPU version; thanks for confirming the lack of VT ...

Jimmy, the list is about support for VMWare ESX server which should be quite a different product from VMWare Server, so I can't use this. Just to be clear, my point is NOT an incompatibility problem between ML150 and VMWare Server; indeed I can confirm a successful installation of Linux 64bit + VMWare server 64 bit on a Pro 150ML G2.
Also it runs fine any 32 bit guest OS.
My core point is that it cannot run any 64bit guest OS ... unfortunately ...

thanks for the prompt answer and kind regards
Roberto
