Proliant 1600 - Maximum Upgrade potential

Hi, We currently have approx 6 Proliant 1600s, each running PII 400s with 256mb RAM (DIMMS). What is the maximum upgrade we can do to the servers in terms of Processor upgrade and the amount of RAM that the server can handle without replacing the motherboard? Can they cope with P3s or are we restricted to PIIs?

If we decide to update the motherboard/processor cage to run a decent spec CPU what would the options be?

Thanks

Re: Proliant 1600 - Maximum Upgrade potential

The Proliant 1600 can go up to 1 GB of RAM and a PIII 600 MHz processor (for HP/Compaq tested upgrades).

313616-B21: 256 MB 100 MHz registered ECC SDRAM RAM

153555-B21: Pentium III 6000 MHz with 512K cache
144003-B22: Thermal upgrade option kit (required if upgrading CPU past 500 MHz).

Check to see if this will be a cost-effective upgrade for you.

Yes, to verify, that is correct on the memory, Maximum memory: 1024MB,Standard memory: 64MB removable, Slots: 4 (4 banks of 1), Module Size: 256MB

ANd yes, the 1600 was never sold with greater than a PIII/600/512, but my guess is because it was the fastest 512 cache PIII that Intel made. Currently we have had good success with 1.2GHz upgrades kits for these systems, you can obtain significantly faster performance (up to 1.4GHz) from your server by upgrading to Intel Pentium III-S├в ┬в ("Tualatin" core, 512KB L2 cache) processors with thi

That is an interesting option you mention there . . . . But what about the voltage regulators? And is there a complete update kit available somewhere? Does it also work as a dual processor system?
You can always improve!

Re: Proliant 1600 - Maximum Upgrade potential

hi neil

the proliant thermal design does not allow for cpus faster than 600 mhz.

the bios does not allow faster processors either.

if your original system is a 450 mhz version or higher, the ppm (processor power module) should provide enough power to run a 600 mhz processor.

the compaq ppms use voltage-id technology to provide the correct voltage to the cpu.
no bios or switch settings are required after a cpu upgrade. (ignore the speed dip switches on the system board - p3 cpus ignore them also)

dont forget to upgrade the bios BEFORE replacing a processor.

Re: Proliant 1600 - Maximum Upgrade potential

I've seen a lot of the 'slotket' upgrades for Slot 1 computers floating about the net. Why exactly won't a Proliant 1600 support something like this? Even if the BIOS reports the CPU name incorrectly, isn't it possible to still run the faster CPU? Also, the slotket boards themselves regulate the voltage for the socket CPU, so as long as it gets more than enough power, it should be able to adjust it to the lower reired voltage of a socket P3.

Terri Harris posted "The Proliant 1600 can go up to 1 GB of RAM and a PIII 600 MHz processor (for HP/Compaq tested upgrades)."

Does that mean a single PIII processor? Or can I fill both slots with PIII 600 MHz processors?

Thanks

The ProLiant 1600 is a dual processor capable server. Yes, you can install two 600MHz processors.
Enjoy!

Paul:

In order to upgrade you server to use the 600MHz processors you will need to install a new I/O cage to support them.

PPM:

So, you will need Spare part Numbers:
1 x I/O Cage: 155349-001
1 x Thermal Upgrade Kit: 161144-001
2 x 600MHz Processor w/heatsink: 155592-001
2 x Processor Power Module: 329267-001

G'luck! -john
Hope this helps!
Enjoy!
