Proliant 2500R - Dual CPU's

I have been given a Proliant 2500R (Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz) and have installed Windows 2003 (Manual method using SmartStart 5.5). Problem is that only one CPU is being detected out of the two. Windows diagnostics says 2 CPUтАЩs present but only 1 seen by the OS. Under Device manager it says тАЬStandard PCтАЭ.

I presume that the problem I have is that I need a driver for W2K3 for dual processor? Does anyone have a link or a solution please?

Many thanks for any help.

Re: Proliant 2500R - Dual CPU's

There may be a HAL issue (Hardware Abstraction Layer)

I cant see why the HAL would not have been installed as a multiprocessor HAL when you did the install, however check microsofts article 234558 for more information

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=234558

If both Procs are detected on post it is likely an O/S issue - relating to the HAL

Re: Proliant 2500R - Dual CPU's

Many thanks for such a fast reply. I tried to change the HAL from Standard PC ├в the others are not being listed when I choose upgrade device driver. When I uncheck/check ├в show compatible hardware├в ├в only standard PC is listed.

I checked the system configuration (F10 on boot) and it is set to Windows 2000. I can not find any reference to ACPI in the bios/system partition ├в but I presume that is because of the age of server.

Is there any other way to add/change this?

Re: Proliant 2500R - Dual CPU's

I found this article on MS web site

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283

So my problem is that Windows is seeing my server as a single CPU non ACPI.

Is there anything in the BIOS or driver that I can change to make it see the dual CPU├в s?

Any help would be really appreciated. Please please├в ┬ж

Re: Proliant 2500R - Dual CPU's

Andrew ,
unfortunately I think your problem is Pentium Pro 200MHz CPU.
See "Windows Server 2003 May Not Use Multiple Processors with Some Pentium Pro or Pentium II Processors"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319091/en-us

Check your CPU stepping.
If stepping is Ok, read this recent thread:

Hi Igor,

You were spot on with the CPU not being supported.

Oh well back to W2K!!!

Many thanks to all.

Re: Proliant 2500R - Dual CPU's

W2K3 does not support multiple processors with the following

x86 Family 6 Model 1 Stepping X GenuineIntel (where X = 1, 2, 6, 7, or 9)тАвx86 Family 6 Model 3 Stepping X GenuineIntel (where X = 3 or 4)

Either downgrade or run with a single CPU. Doh!!!
