Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

I have a Proliant 3000 with dual 300 cpu's. What am I able to upgrade to? I show a maximum processor speed of 600 listed in the reference guide but I've found that doesn't necessarily mean the unit I have will support it. Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

The fastest processors supported in your server would be 333MHz. You have a Gen 1 Proliant 3000.

Re: Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

Hi Darren;

The systemboard in your current PL3000 will support two 333's max.

Hope that helps!

Re: Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

If you want to upgrade it to a CPU above 333, you have to replace the system board with a different version. On yours the CPU and the VRM are on a card that plugs into a socket on the system board. On the newer system board the CPU and the VRM are on the system board itself. This newer system board will accomodate PII and PIII processors from 350 to 650MHz. No other chassis component needs to be replaced to do the upgrade. However, the memory modules are different so you will not be able to use the RAM from the old board. These system boards (used) are readily available from different sources at a very reasonable price. I have done many of these upgrades and it is an easy task.

Re: Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

so if i understand this correctly, there are two generations of proliant server, gen. I and II. since my server runs at 333, i have a gen I system correct?

for me to upgrade to a processor 550 or 600 i will need a new system board which is the motherboard. also the memory will need to be changed also.

also mentioned in this forum, a part number was referenced regarding the 100mhz gtl bus and sdram (179766-b21). is this what i need?
Thanks again everyone.

Re: Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

also does anyone know part number for the gen II system board that will allow me to accept processors 550 or 600?

thanks again.
Thanks again everyone.

Re: Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

Hello David,
Here is what you need depending upon the CPUs:

System I/O Board with Tray (PCI/ISA), (400, 450, and 500 MHz) 179779-001 ;

System I/O Board with Tray (PCI/ISA), (550 MHz only) - 146937-001

System I/O Board with Tray (PCI/ISA), (600 MHz only) -155347-001.
These are the spare part nos.

Re: Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

so to upgrade my proliant 3000 333mhz to 600mhz, i would purchase the system i/o board part #155347-001?

then purchase the 600mhz cpu, vrm, and heat sink kit plus the memory?

also, since i have a old prolaint 5500 (ppro 200). can i purchase a system i/o board and replace the current board basically making it a 3000 like the description above?

thanks again for your response.
Thanks again everyone.

Re: Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

Hello David,
Yes that is correct. For PL5500 you need the System I/O Board P/N 328699-001.

Re: Proliant 3000 CPU Upgrade

wow your up late! :-)

so the board for the 5500 is a actual upgrade for the for the server or is it a board from another model that fits?

the reason why i ask is because i want to know what upgrade kit i need to purchase.

on a side note, what is your opinion on these upgrades? am i just better off purchasing a new server? do you recommend any new / used sites for these parts?

thanks again! :-)
Thanks again everyone.
