Proliant 3000, my setup?

I recently acquired a project to familiarize myself with a Proliant 3000, setup and deploy as a server for a small business. I have figured out most of the config of the server, which is:
500 Pent III (single, but will purchase 2nd processor)
256 ECC PC100 (128 X2)
2 9.1 gb wide ultra drive
single power supply (I believe a 750 watt, part PS4060???, but it could be a 500
2 ethernet nics.

So now I want to confirm some ?'s
1. Does this server have a raid controller??
2. What is the biggest SCSI HD that it supports??

It would be nice to be able to input the serial # into an area in the tech support web site and get the shipped config, is there such a page??

I am just learning about scsi, and inside the case scsi 1 has a cable plugged into it, but the scsi port2 does not, what does that mean?? Does it mean that Drive cage B is not plugged in?

Where can I find the serial number of theis server??

Hopefully this will get me started, but I am sure i will be full of more ?'s

Thanks for your time, knowledge and willingness to help a fellow human being out.

Re: Proliant 3000, my setup?

Hi William,

1. This server should have a RAID controller (smart array 32xx series, most probably).
2. it can support 36.4 GB wide ultra 80 pin HDD.
3. you can use following link for getting prts information:

http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main

4. it means simple, that 2nd SCSI port is empty and not connected to any cage or device.

5. serial number is usually written on a label on front-bezel, and inside the server. you can also fine it from "system information"page of BIOS.

Re: Proliant 3000, my setup?

This server might have shipped with an array controller, but this was only with "array models", not all of them.

As with the controller, some models shipped with a newer drive cage to support the newer types of drives, but not all servers did. If you pull one of the existing drives out of the machine, what is the part number on the bottom? This should be able to shed some light on the types of drives which will work.

On this machine, the serial number is on the back of the machine next to the last pci slot.

If you provide the portion of the serial number in the middle which normally consists of letter, letter, letter, number (eg. abc1); I could then provide some more info on this server.

Re: Proliant 3000, my setup?

Thanks for taking time to assist me. I believe this is the number you are talking about:

35cmg

Hopefully I provided the correct info.
Now I did bid on another server on ebay to use to swap parts out, here it is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5782571493&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOAB:US:6
I am going to get the processor, ram, and HD's from it. If needed PSU, and if possible the raid controller. So are these controllers built into the drive cage board or are they a pci item??

Thanks for your time

Re: Proliant 3000, my setup?

From the factory, this server doesn't have an array controller installed.

Also the newer drives can't be installed in this server without a drive cage upgrade (pn 387087-001). Upgrading the drive cage will allow the use of newer drives, but will not allow you to use the 9.1 gb drives you have now.

More information on this server and the standard shipping config is available from:

Re: Proliant 3000, my setup?

First of all I want to apologize, I must look like one of those typical people who don't respond, I was watching for the email to notify me of a response. I didn't get an email so I finally checked and low and behold help was there. Thank you

Now, I do want to clear a few questions up. I purchased this other server, described and link provided. Is the drive cage interchangeable?? Is the smart array in the drive cage?? When I receive the other server, where do I find the pn on the drive cage??

I am going to swap parts from the one I just purchase to the older one, I am doing this because the one i purchased is a rackmount version (we do not have a rack) and the one I have now is a case w casters.

So when I set this up, I want the smart array to setup the 36 gig scsi hd's as raid 5, then I was going to use the 9.1 gig scsi hd on a raid 1 for a database. I guess I might have to rethink that senario.

Thanks for your time, the project is ongoing and I look forward to your response.

Re: Proliant 3000, my setup?

I have take win 2000 server cert, but I am going to deploy win 2003 server. So beyond the above questions what is the best book to use to deploy win 2003 server??

Re: Proliant 3000, my setup?

Is the drive cage in the model you just purchased different from the one in the server you already have?

The pn on the drive cage should be able to be found on the back of it. An easy way to tell if drive cage will support the newer types of drives is to see how many drive slots there are. If there are 10 drive slots, then it's the newer type which allows the use of newer drives.

Re: Proliant 3000, my setup?

Well I got the new server (finally, there was a billing mix up). Now The one I bought is a dual 500 pent ( I swapped this into my caster model), 1 gig of ram ( took this), they advertised 4 36 gig hd's and it came with 4 18 gig HD's ( so I guess I will have to see their response. This one has the scsi array controller smart array 3200 ( I put this in my caster model). So on with the questions:
1. the hd cage in my current model and the one I purchased seem to be the same (place for up to 7 hd's) at least that is how it appears. I want to make sure that it won't do any good swapping the drive cage. So I pulled out the 18gb scsi drive and the 9.1gb scsi drive hoping this will shed some light.
18gb= compaq pn: 142688-001
9gb= compaq pn: 142685-001
My plan is to create a raid 5 array and a raid 1 mirror.
Raid 5 for op sys and user files, raid one for a couple small databases. NOw is where I understand about fighting for disk space. I want to use say 4 36 gb hd's for the raid 5, and the 2 9gb raid 1 for the databases. So I guess my ? is , are the drive cages the same? Next question:
2. if I run this many drives should I run both psu's?
3. I have a friend that is a net admin with a compaq server and he told me in order to get started with this server download the smartstart software and that will get me going, is that true??? Will thiat SW help me to configure my raid controller/arrays??

Thanks for taking the time to help
