Proliant 5500 Server Processor Problem

I have a Proliant 5500 with 2 processors (Pentium III Xeon at 550MHz). When this server boot up, it shown 2 processors.

But the OS only showed 1 processor.

I run the diagnostic and found that Processor 2 is disabled. This is the diagnostic result.

CPU (Main System)

-------------------- Device Description -------

Processor 1 (Pentium III ┬о Xeon at 550MHz)

Numeric Coprocessor (integrated 387-Compatible at 550MHz)
Secondary Cache (512K)

Processor 2 (Pentium III ┬о Xeon Disabled)

How can I enable back this processor?

Thanks & Rgds,

Hi,

You need to update the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) with the ones designed for two CPUs.

refer to microsoft support:

TV,

Appreciate your reponse to the thread.

However, I am still not clear if there is any vendor specific HAL as for Proliant 5500 as per the microsoft article ??

Re: Proliant 5500 Server Processor Problem

Use the multiproc HALL that is on the windows CD.

It works.

You have to reboot afterwards.

Re: Proliant 5500 Server Processor Problem

Look witch uniproc version you have and choose the correponding multiproc.

I believe you have the ACPI UniProc and you need the ACPI MultiProc

Re: Proliant 5500 Server Processor Problem

Hi,

Very Good Questions, but I don't know the answer on that, I haven't done yet a CPU upgrade on a Win2K3.

If you install it originaly with two or more processors, they will be picked up automaticaly during the installation.

sincerly.

Re: Proliant 5500 Server Processor Problem

Tv,

It's not an upgrade actually but fresh windows 2003 installation - didn't seem to enable the second processor automatically.

Anyway, Thnks for your help thus far.

Re: Proliant 5500 Server Processor Problem

I am running the ProLiant 5500 with 4 - PIII 550's and did a fresh install of Windows 2003 Standard server and it picked up all 4 CPU's automatically. Did you go into F10 and system setup to see if the processors are enabled there>?

Re: Proliant 5500 Server Processor Problem

The server run okay after POST. Processor detected and everything runs fine.

However, the system showed that it had been disable in Windows 2003 server. According to HP, we will need to purchase the support pack (will cost few thousand quid) to enable back the processor.

This sound pretty rediculous to me.
