Proliant 800 scsiport.sys stop error in WIN2k startup

Hi,

We use a proliant 800 and are trying to upgrade it from NT4 to WIN2K Server (clean install). At the same time trying to configure controllers for SCSI drive and RAID controller. Everything goes fine until Setup tries to start Windows 2000 when we get a stop error MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED along with various addresses and pointing to SCSIPORT.SYS driver as the problem. How can I install the newest driver if we can't get the computer to boot up? any ideas would be gratefully received.

thanks

What version of Smart Start are you using?
If there is no Data you are concerned about; did you run the system erase?
Was ths an assisted install or a manual?

Sorry to take so long to reply, but things are incredibly hectic here at the moment....but to answer your questions....

We are not using Smart Start as we believe the version we have is too old and incompatible, we also now know that we cannot find the disk for it (having been stored by people now not with the company). We didn't run the system erase as there is data we are concerned about.

It was a manual install.

Dear William,
You need to update the SCSIPORT driver by using the latest Service Pack and update the BIOS to the latest.
Now after the Service Pack is installed DO NOT reboot as this service pack more than likely has over writen the SCSI drivers. Use the latest or more recent Compaq drivers for the Raid controller and/or SCSI controller.

Hi Mark,

Do we apply this solution to the existing NT4 installation prior to the upgrade?

Thanks

Re: Proliant 800 scsiport.sys stop error in WIN2k startup

Before you upgrade NT to Win2000 please run a program called PRIMER. This program provides you with the ability to remove the unsupported utilities before upgrading to Windows 2000.
The Service Pack should be applied after the installation of Windows 2000.

Re: Proliant 800 scsiport.sys stop error in WIN2k startup

Mark,

Thanks a lot for the previous advice, however, having run the primer program and decided to go for the upgrade option as opposed to clean install this time. The upgrade program detects that our Raid Adapter is not compatible with WIN2K Server so once the files have been copied and the system automatically reboots, i've pressed F6, installed the WIN2k driver for the adapter and continued on, but the same SCSIPORT.sys KMODE error has come up again, preventing me from starting WIN2K server and thus applying the service pack as suggested. Is there anything else you can think of that could be causing this?

Re: Proliant 800 scsiport.sys stop error in WIN2k startup

Can you get back in to NT?
Is there a 3rd party SCSI card in this erver? If there is can you please remove it. During the HW detection of Win2000 it will not pickup the SCSI card and therefore not install the SCSIport.sys driver. If you can back into NT then please set this to manual.

Keep me posted.

Re: Proliant 800 scsiport.sys stop error in WIN2k startup

Hi Mark,

Yes, we do have a 3rd party Adaptec RAID SCSI card but we cannot remove it as it has the disks attached. We can get back into NT no problem though, what is it that we need to set to manual that you've suggested?

Cheers!

Is the OS on these drives that are attached to the Adaptec controller?

Re: Proliant 800 scsiport.sys stop error in WIN2k startup

The only thing I can suggest right now is to see if there is a rom flash for the Adaptec card.
Obviously the SCSIPORT.SYS driver doesn't like that card or vice versa.
I wish I had a fix for you. Sorry.

Re: Proliant 800 scsiport.sys stop error in WIN2k startup

Not to worry Mark, we managed to get hold of our Smartstart disk and when we used that to assist our upgrade everything worked out fine. Strange but true! Thanks a lot for your assistance on this one though, it was much appreciated.
