Proliant DL180 G9 - Problem with ethernet 331t adapter and controller P440
Hi,
I have a problem with fans and temperature on a hp proliant DL180 G9 (L9N12A code) configured as follows:
a) dual CPU Xeon E5-2609 1.90GHz v3
b) Smart Array P440 / 4G with battery;
c) 4 SATA HD from 1 terabyte configured as two logical drives of 1TB each;
d) an HP Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller who are not connected device;
e) an HP Ethernet 1Gb 2-port Adapter 361st.
f) 40 GB of RAM
g) 4 fans
The P440 controller is installed in slot 1;
Having the need for additional LAN ports, I installed in slot 2 (PCI Express X8) a 1GB ethernet hp 4-port adapter 331t.
After installing the adapter the ventilation system of the server it has started going at full power.
The problem is not solved even if install the adapter in slot 3 (PCI Express X8).
If remove the 4-port Ethernet 1GB 331t adapter, everything returns normal and the fans run at 10%-11%.
Analyzing the chart of temperatures in ILO4/System Information/Temperature Information, I noticed that the temperature of controller P440 is
about 85 ┬░C in the absence of the ethernet card 331T.
It is not a problem with the sensor as in fact the temperature of the controller is much higher than the rest of the components which have a
temperature between 27 and 45 ┬░C.
Is normal that the P440 controller has the temperature so high ?
The BIOS and firmwares of all the system components are updated to the latest version (date 6.15.2015).
How can I fix it?
By some post of other sites it seems to be useful for the solution to install the SPP. So it is ??
Greetings and thanks.

Re: Proliant DL180 G9 - Problem with ethernet 331t adapter and controller P440
If you're running Linux install the hp-tg3sd driver.
This package installs a Broadcom AHS agent daemon that helps extract
sensor and health data from network adapters listed below
HP Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 330i Adapter
HP Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 332T Adapter
HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331FLR Adapter
HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter
HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331i Adapter
You can get the driver from the SPP or her: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5194896&swItemId=MTX_4cac1a6773094c248682d74820&swEnvOid=4103#
Or configure the system to use the HP Software Delivery Repository
http://downloads.linux.hp.com/
Here is the NIC driver for WIndows, I'm assuming it does the same http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5194896&swItemId=MTX_de344f22b2c245ec859d7821e3&swEnvOid=4138#

Re: Proliant DL180 G9 - Problem with ethernet 331t adapter and controller P440
Hi Jimmy,
thanks for the reply.
On the server is installed Win2012 R2.
I run SPP which identified the network card and installed the updated driver that you have recommended.
The problem has not been solved.
Some other solution ?

Re: Proliant DL180 G9 - Problem with ethernet 331t adapter and controller P440
Open a support case with HP. I mainly work with Linux and when the tg3sd driver is loaded I know iLO can then see the temp sensor. I assumed the driver for Windows included the sensor information. For Linux the tg3sd driver must be loaded along with the tg3 driver for iLO to get the sensor data

Another option ...
Do you use Intelligent Provisioning when install the OS ? Many issues might occured when we didn't use Intelligent Provisioning.
You use 4 SATA HDD. I think you don't need to use additional Smart Array as like as SA P440. You could try to use embedded B140 controller with AHCI enabled from BIOS. Then compare the result.

Re: Proliant DL180 G9 - Problem with ethernet 331t adapter and controller P440
The operating system has been installed using Intelligent Provisioning.
The server in its basic configuration has the P440 controller that is much better performance than the B140.
The disks were configured with this controller (including logical partitions).
I would not do the test that you propose at the risk of losing all the work already done (installation, configuration and update of core OS and 2 VM with windows domain and server echange, etc)
