Proliant DL320e Gen8

Hello,

I have a Proliant DL320e Gen8 server that I just received 4 SAS hard drives for. I have found different reports as to whether or not this server requires a SAS controller or that they support them already. Is this something I need to purchase separately? If so which one? I need it to recognize all 4 drives. I have installed the drives but when the server boots it says No Drives found.

Thanks!

Sam

Re: Proliant DL320e Gen8

Hi,

Refer to the server QuickSpecs.

NOTE: All 6G SATA/SAS Drives listed in HDD section are tested and supported for both 3G and 6G speed. A HP Smart Array Controller is required for 6G HDD.

According to that NOTE, what I assume is that, server supports both 3G and 6G SAS hard drives but a Smart Array controller is required for 6G hard drives and not for 3G hard drives.

Thank You!

Re: Proliant DL320e Gen8

The DL320e Gen8 ships with an embedded B120i RAID controller. This controller is SATA only. If you need a SAS RAID controller you need one of the optional "P" series Smart Array controllers.

HP Smart Array P222/512 FBWC 6Gb 1-port Int/1-port Ext SAS Controller 631667-B21

HP Smart Array P420/1GB FBWC 6Gb 2-ports Int SAS Controller 631670-B21

HP Smart Array P420/2GB FBWC 6Gb 2-ports Int SAS Controller 631671-B21

If your using the 3.5" drives you might also need this cable

HP DL320e Gen8 Mini SAS Cable Kit

NOTE: HP DL320e Gen8 mini SAS cable kit would be required for the server to be

compatible with 4LFF Hot Plug drives, H222 and P222 controllers. 685018-B21
