Proliant DL360 G4p - Smart Array 6400 - MSA20 - Ultrium 448 (LTO2)

Hello,

I have a Proliant DL360 G4p, Windows 2003 SE with an Smart Array 6400 with 2 connectors.
The first connector has an MSA20 with 7 disks, and it's been working perfectly for one year.

Now, I need to connect a external Ultrium 448 LTO2 to the second connector (which works right in another server). When I do it, Windows detects the drive, but 5 minuts later the server hangs.

After rebooting the server, I can see the LTO2, but not the MSA20 and its logical and physical drives. The eventlog of Smart Array shows:

06/12/2009 11:56:32 Tape Drive inserted : DEVICE Port 2, ID 3 of Array Controller in slot 2.

06/12/2009 11:57:02 SCSI bus fault occurred on Storage Box box 0, , Port 0 of Array Controller in slot 2. This may result in a "downshift" in transfer rate for one or more hard drives on the bus.

After power off the Ultrium LTO2 and restart the server, the system works again.

More information:
Smart Array 6400 Firmware: Rev B, v2.58
Smart Array 6400 Driver: 5.72.0.32

Is it possible to connect the MSA20 and Ultrium 448 at the same Smart Array 6400?
Will I need to upgrade the driver or the firmware?

Thank you very much.

Hi cnb, thanks for your reply.

One more question. At this moment we have 2 controllers in the Proliant: the Smart Array 6400 for the MSA20, and an LSI Adapter SAS 3000 series for 2 internal disks in RAID 1.

In technical specifications of Smart Array 6402, it has 2 internal and 2 external SCSI connectors. Can I connect these 2 internal disks (RAID 1) to the controller Smart Array 6400, and the MSA20 to external connector?

Then I can quit the LSI Adapter and put another controller for the Ultrium 448 LTO2.

Thank you very much.

See the second URL that cnb gave you above, technical question number 3.

I general, array controller cards are meant to be used with disks that are bound into array groups. They are not meant for tape drives or even disks that you want to use them in single or standalone disk setup. You should buy a "simple" scsi controller (not RAID controller) for your tape drive.

Re: Proliant DL360 G4p - Smart Array 6400 - MSA20 - Ultrium 448 (LTO2)

Hi,

The conclusion is that I can connect the internal and external disks to the same controller Smart Array 6402 (but not working toghether), and connect the Ultrium 448 to another single controller.

I will try do it this afternoon.

Thank you very much.

I can't do it. My internal disks are SATA and can't connect it to Smart Array 6400.

Solution: connect internal disks to SATA controller onboard, and make a software RAID.
