Proliant DL360 G5 with MSA50

Hello everyone,

we're considering to extend the storage capacity of one of our Proliant DL360 G5 servers. We're looking for an affordable solution, so we're thinking of installing an MSA50 enclosure.

We currently have a P400i RAID controller with internal SFF 10k SAS drives. What is our best option to attach the MSA50 to the DL360 G5 machine? Do we need a P800 controller with external SAS connectors? If we need a P800 controller, do we need to replace the P400i with it or can they work together in tandem (meaning: the P400i controls the internal drives and the P800 controls to MSA50)?

Does VMware ESXi 5.1.x support such a configuration in your experience? What about FreeNAS? Is there any difference from FreeNAS (FreeBSD) when using an MSA50 expansion compared to the "internal only" configuration?

Thanks in advance for your help

The internal smartarray can remain, but you need a new controller for the external disks.

Hope this helps!
