Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

I have some questions, how would I go about installing an operating system. I have a SCSI HD 18.2GB 15K installed on it already. I placed a Windows NT 4.0 CD inside it gives me the error (NON DISK OR DISK ERROR) when I placed a windows 95 FLOPPY it read it just fine. I'm currently downloading Windows 2003 R2, will that work on this server? I just need answers to why the CD wasn't working, how do I access the BIOS. I don't really understand. Sorry for all this, pretty dumb on this type of stuff.

Thanks for the help, if any is given!

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

The system is a Pentium 3 based chipset, and it should work without an issue. See the Microsoft support document here:

Good Luck.

Still need to figure out why it wont boot off the CD, for I can install an OS.

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

It boots from the floppy but does not boot from the CD? Two things to check.
1. Does it even try to boot from the CD drive? You need to set the CD drive as the boot device in the BIOS or include the CD drive in the boot devices list and change the order.
2. Bad CD drive or bad CD media. Have you tried this CD on another system or tried a different CD media?

How can I access the BIOS on this server? The HD was wiped, it only boots from the FLOPPY like I stated, when I place a CD you hear it spinning but it doesn't do anything. The CD is fine, worked in all other computers.

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

Most likely the server tries to boot from the CD. Is the CD a bootable CD or a regular data CD? Maybe you have a bad cd drive.

Have you booted from it on another server or PC.

Do you see something like "press F10 to enter setup"? Try pressing F10 during boot up. If nothing happens, most likely the BIOS partition on the hard disk is erased. Do you have a smartstart CD? Download a smartstart CD from HP.

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

Will the smartstart CD work? Because the CD I have is 110% fine.

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

On these older servers, the BIOS sits on a small partition on the hard disk.
Try hitting F10 during POST. If nothing happens, the BIOS partition was probably blown away during the windows NT installation.

In this case you definitely need a smartstart CD.

Well, I have the Smartstart CD right? It wont boot from the CD, but it boots from a floppy?...

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

Should have added, when it tries to boot with nothing in it of course, it BEEPS TWICE and the screen says

NON DISK OR DISK ERROR press any key to try again.

Answer this please. Have you ***booted*** from that CD in another PC or server? Putting the CD in another drive and looking at its files is not the same as booting.

Other than this, there isn't much I can do from here.

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

Yes...I thought that would be common sense, sorry. I have tried it in other computers, it works fine. The server wont boot from the CD, but boot from Floppys. CD is fine, works on other computers, tried all the CD's I tried on the server, work fine like I said.

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

About the only thing left to check is the CD drive. Can you pull the CD drive and try it on another computer or hook up another CD drive to this server?

I hate to think that you are deadlocked and can not do anything about it. That is, you need the BIOS to make the CD bootable but the BIOS is wiped out and you need the CD to recreate it.

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

One of the URLs I posted before, mentioned the Compaq System configuration Utility. The link to it however is broken but I found this URL to download it.

It creates four diskettes. I don't know what this system config utility is but if it is a predecessor to the SmartStart CD it may be useful.

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

Sadly I can't test the CD drive on another PC or hook one up to it, as the CD drive here has a different port (Forget the name of it) and it doesn't have the attachments to have those IDE CD drives.

Those files go onto floppy disks right, and repairs the BIOS right?

Re: Proliant DL360 Series ES1013

The CD drive is probably SCSI interface.

As I said I don't know what this utilitys does but from the little I read about it it might help you. Download it, make the four floppies, and try it out. You got nothing to lose but the time you put into it.
