Proliant DL380 G8 Thermal Shutdown

Hi,

 

Anyone knows what is the temperature that will trigger a thermal shutdown of a Proliant DL380 G8 server ?

The temp thresholds should show up in the ILO status page for temperature.  It will show the current temp and then the warning/critical thresholds.

the temprature varies depending on the component and sensor, a system board temperature probe tends to hover around 70-80 degrees Celsius, you can change the cooling settings from your RBSU

 

here is a typical gen8 DL380 readings:

Hi Hazem,

 

I have went into RBSU but found only the settings for Thermal Shutdown to be enabled but could not find any section to change the settings.

 

However, I will relook at this again.

 

I have a situation with these details:

 

1. The the front panel 'Over Temp' light is flashing red and the server shutdown itself. Window sevent log states that the server power manager initates a shutdown transition.

 

2. This should be a thermal shutdown due to the temperature threshold have been reached.

 

3. The aircond unit must have failed or stopped.

 

4, However, there is anohter DL380 G5 server in the same rack but this server continues to run.

Does it means the G5 server thresold is set much higher ?

 

5. As mentioned, I have not been able to find the thresold settings for the G8 server at this point. But i have a screenshot of the DL380G5 server that is running on the same rack. See attached.

 

6. Do you have a sample of the temperature thresold settings on a DL380 G8 server so maybe I can do a comparison with the one on the DL380 G5 ?

Did you ever log in to the ILO and check it out in there?

 

The DL380 G5 might have different thresholds than the Gen8.  It will have a different CPU with different TDP, and maybe a different # of drives or memory.  Even though the ambient temp is the same for both of them when your server room AC failed, they don't generate the same amount of internal heat probably, so the temps inside the box will be different.  If that DL380 G5 isn't doing a heavy workload then that's probably why it kept running.

 

Even if the 2 servers were identicaly, if their workloads are different then they won't have the same internal temps.

 

I hope that helps, and if you need any help checking the ILO for the system status, make sure you have ILO setup for remote access (IP address, you've setup a user/pass or know the default admin password, etc).

 

It's pretty easy to get to... you just login and click on the system information section which has tabs for fans, temperature, drives, etc.

 

If the system is turned off, some readings might not be available since they only show up when the server is turned on, but I think the temperature tab will still show the thresholds for warning/critical.
