Proliant DL380 cpqcissm errors

Hi

We have DL380 G4 Windows 2003 Server used as backup server. We have a HP MSL6060 tape library connected to it on the internal on-board SCSI card.
We also have a FC HBA FCA2101 installed in the server for disk staging of backup.
For the last days I have noticed several errors in the Event Log on this server.

This is the event:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: cpqcissm
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Date: 7/27/2005
Time: 1:23:13 PM
User: N/A
Computer:
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\cpqcissm1.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 0f 00 10 00 01 00 6a 00 ......j.
0008: 00 00 00 00 0b 00 04 c0 .......├А
0010: 0b 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0018: 29 0b 00 00 00 00 00 00 ).......
0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0028: 00 00 00 00 07 00 00 00 ........
0030: 00 00 00 00 07 00 00 00 ........

Does anyone knows how to fix this issue?

From time to time, the server is also restarting automatically during backup, so I suspect this to be of the same reason.

Some help is apreciated.

You may install the latest Proliant Support Pack for W2003 and update the firmware to start trouble shooting.

Tape libraries or autoloaders are not supported on the integrated array controller. Have you been able to try this on a separate scsi adapter?
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: Proliant DL380 cpqcissm errors

Thanks Raj and KOV for your input.

I did an upgrade to the latest BIOS and 6i firmware. I also installed Support Pack v7.30 and the server looks more stable now.

However, I still see the same events in my Event log, so my problem is not completely solved.

Terry Hutchings: Do you know if there are any documentation that says that a tape library is not supported on the internal controller?

Thanks.

Re: Proliant DL380 cpqcissm errors

I have had a similar issue wherein an external DAT Drive is connected on to the onboard 6i controller on DL380G4.

The errors observed are EVENT ID 9 & 11 with source as cpqcissm.

These errors generraly occur after every reboot or if the online ACU is running. If you disconnect the Tape Drive the errors will no longer be seen.

Refer Article http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=PSD_EX041001_CW01

Above article talks about the Event ID 9 on Smart Array controllers with Non Hot pluggable drives and can be safely ignored.

You may want to check disconnecting the library for the errors. If they are occuring only on reboot and with MSL Library connected, they may be ignored.

Also,as Terry said it is not recommended to have Tape Library on the Smart Array Controller and should have a dedicated SCSI Adapter.

Re: Proliant DL380 cpqcissm errors

Thank you all for very helpful feedback.

I think I'll better buy a new SCSI card and connect my backup library to that one.

Thanks again.
