Proliant Gen10 - "Server networking transceiver and cable compatibility matrix"
Hello,
the current "Server networking transceiver and cable compatibility matrix" from March 2017 does provide information about compatible fiber optics for:
- 817753-B21 HPE Eth 10/25Gb 2P 640SFP28 Adptr
- 817749-B21 HPE Eth 10/25Gb 2P 640FLR-SFP28Adptr
I´m missing information whether "HPE X190 25G SFP28 LC SR 100m (JL293A)" is compatible with both NICs.
Is there any updated Server networking transceiver and cable compatibility matrix available?
Regards

Re: Proliant Gen10 - "Server networking transceiver and cable compatibility matrix"
Isn't the HPE X190 25G SFP28 LC SR 100m MM Transceiver (JL293A) used on some specific HPE Comware operating system based Switches specifically targeted for SFP28 like the HPE FlexFabric 5950 Switch Series?
If you're dealing with HPE Ethernet 10/25Gb 2-port 640SFP28 Adapter (817753-B21) or HPE Ethernet 10/25Gb 2-port 640FLR-SFP28 Adapter (817749-B21) why not using instead - Server NIC side - a 25Gb SFP28 supported fiber optic Transceiver like the HPE 25Gb SFP28 SR 100m Transceiver (845398-B21), as stated on both NICs QuickSpecs?
The question would eventually be: Are JL293A and 845398-B21 equal/similar/interchangeable (if used into a ProLiant Server NIC)?

Indeed HPE X190 25G SFP28 LC SR 100m MM Transceiver (JL293A) is meant for H3C based HPE 5950 series. There are H3C based HPE 10GbE optics mentioned within the compatibility matrix. that are marked to be supported for those NICs. So I ask whether those H3C based HPE JL293A optic can be used aswell within those mentioned (Mellanox based) NICs, aswell The reason I want to use JL293A instead of 845398-B21 is pricing. My HPE partner sells me the first one way! cheaper than the second one. The only information missing is HPE´s written support/compatibility of those SFP28 optics when used in the NICs.
(Of course, every optic can be used in each NIC, in general. But I do need HPE`s "ok".)

Re: Proliant Gen10 - "Server networking transceiver and cable compatibility matrix"
OK, clear.
So you say that, along with the 25G Transceiver 845398-B21, HPE should have listed also the 25G Transceiver JL293A because (or for the same reason) HPE listed 10G Transceivers coming from HPE Networking for FlexNetwork Switches (respectively J9150A and the J9152A)...good point.
Probably (I'm not HPE, that's a personal opinion only not supported by technical references) those Transceivers (JL293A and 845398-B21) are the same and differentiate only (if any) regarding theirs internal firmware sign (to make them seen respectively as JL293A and not 845398-B21 and vice-versa).
Would be interesting to dig into specific technical documents to prove that is really true.
Edit: as example it seems that 455883-B21 (BladeSystem c-Class SFP+ 10Gb Transceiver for Short Range SR) superseded the older J9150A even if J9150A is still listed in the matrix document you linked.
Edit (March 2020...yup...already gone three years!): latest HPE SERVER NETWORKING TRANSCEIVER AND CABLE COMPATIBILITY MATRIX (A00002507ENW.pdf, March 2020 Revision 11) is available.
