Hi,

First Installation blues ...

No matter what I do, I get an inaccessible boot device error 0x0000007B blue screen of death. Either by following JBOD single disk to Mirror upgrade or NLite slip-streaming the RAID driver into a boot CD.

Seems to me that the Adaptec driver does not want to load independant of BIOS RAID enablement settings, and dies just as the NT kernal loads.

Windows 2003 server standard SP2 32Bit
BIOS: 2008.03.26 (A) 4 Apr 2008 (tried downgrading)
HP Embedded G5 SATA RAID
tried - 1.4.17010.0 (25 Jan 2008)
and 1.4.17015.0 (18 Jan 2008)
SATA Drives: 2 of 500GB connected to SATA1 & SATA2

Is this really going to be fixed by me purchasing an expensive HP USB floppy drive, or would I be better off putting the money towards a proper RAID card?

Pained.

BTW my server product ID is 455948-035

I'm ahead of you. I've already tried this SmartStart lookalike CD. No luck. Same results as other installation methods I've tried.


When installing the Easy-Setup CD

This CD does not install any of the components of the HP Embedded G5 SATA RAID Controller Driver. They are not visible in the Add/Remove hardware wizard list (where plug & play should pick them up?), not visible in device manager, and not visible if I try and search for the file 'aarahci.sys' on the OS partition.


Smart Component install of HP Embedded G5 SATA RAID Controller Driver

Because the RAID software driver is not loaded, the system does NOT blue screen on booting with the BIOS RAID disabled - so here I have tried to load the smart component install "1.4.17015.0" which fails straight away with a warning message about not finding hardware (well that may be because I disabled it?).

Manual install of HP Embedded G5 SATA RAID Controller Driver

Extracting the individual files from the smart component install archive, allows me to try and install via the Add/Remove hardware 'have disk' method for 'SCSI and RAID controllers'. There are two drivers visible - 'Adaptec Processor Device (Pseudo)' and 'Adaptec Serial ATA HostRAID'. I've manually installed both under 'SCSI and RAID controllers' and restarting it's either a Code 10 failure with RAID disabled, and a blue screen with RAID enabled.

Of course by now, I'm working on only one disk of the RAID, and it's mirror is now invalidated with my driver software changes. :-(

Hi,

Original author here. Sorry for not replying earlier - been away.

Our issue was resolved by buying a USB floppy drive (made by NEC model UF0002 badged as Dell) and doing it all the MS way with the F6 key ...

There does not seem to be a way of installing this driver when the already installed OS without RAID driver has booted as the hardware needs enabling in BIOS prior to doing the driver installation.

And if you enable the RAID hardware in BIOS for an installed OS without RAID driver, you can't boot into the OS. You get the BSOD.

Chickens and Eggs come to mind.

For us the specially prepared HP SmartStart alike CD doesn't help at all! And neither did slipstreaming.

So, save time folks, get yourselves a USB floppy drive!

On an aside, might issues like this work more sanely if HP could make use of the 'Virtual Install Disk' feature in the BIOS for F6 drivers, rather than having users relying on external USB devices? Isn't that what this BIOS feature is for?
