Proliant ML150 G6 + 3x2TB hdd RAID 5 + Windows 2008R2 St

Hi,

I have the following configuration:

A new ML 150G6, 1 CPU, 10GB RAM, 3 SAS HDD 2TB each in a RAID5, total = 3.63TB volume.

Windows 2008R2 st.

I have two problems:

After the Windows installation

a) I can not convert the disk from basic to GPT, nither to BASIC.  The option to select a diferent type of disk is off.

b) I can allocate only 2TB at all, and the 1.6TB left is unusable. The right click only lets you select properties.

Please help me!!!!

Cordially,

Rafael Travecedo

Re: Proliant ML150 G6 + 3x2TB hdd RAID 5 + Windows 2008R2 St

HI Rafael,

There are some limitations.

the onboard controller (HP Smart Array B110i SATA controller) does not support more than 2 TB in a single logical drive and it does not support greater than 2TB hard drive.

You need HP Smart Array P410 Controller to use greater than 2 TB volume. Please refer to quickspecs for more info

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13249_div/13249_div.HTML

Operating system looks at the logical Drive (Hardware Raid) as a single physical disk and most of the windows versions do not support greater than 2 tb as a single disk. Hence, GPT is required. refer to Microsoft support website for more info

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg463525

I guess both the issues are releted to controller limitation if you are using the HP Smart Array B110i SATA controller.

hope this helps,

Regards,

Aftab

As you probably know the limit for a MBR disk in windows with NTFS is 2TB. And to go further than that you need to convert to GPT. The thing is that you can't have any partitions or volumes created on the disk when you are doing the conversion. see following link.
