Proliant ML310e Gen8 v2 and Windows Server 2012 R2 - BSOD after update KB2919355

Hello,

I've tried to install 2012 R2 on ML310e Gn8 v2 several times, but every time after the KB2919355 is installed, server goes in constant BSOD loop for 3-4 times. When it goes in 5th restart, then it enters automatic windows recovery and manages to boot in OS - unfortunately, after an hour or two, same problem appears (BSOD loop). I tried to search for solution and managed to find one: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/cbe63608-aab1-4ceb-8828-eb358ac766e4/windows-server-2012r2-fail-to-boot-after-installing-kb2919355-update?forum=winserver8gen

Generaly it is a problem is with B120i RAID controler driver -> i've replaced ver. 62.10.0.64 (that is normally used fro 2012 R2) with the ver. 6.10.0.64 (which is used in 2008 R2) and things are working great. Of course, this is just temporarely workaround so I'm wondering will the HP give some official solution for this problem?

Don't need to mention that BIOS and all FW are up to date, update has been done through intelligent provisioning.

thx!

BR,

Unfortunately this isn't going to help you but we're struggling in the same way with a couple of brand new Proliant DL360e Gen8 servers and Windows Server 2012 R2. It's more of a rant, tbh.

The intelligent provisioning firmware update process was a joke, with the server telling us it was going to update various components to the latest firmware, then ignoring our selections when it came to actually perform the update.

Anyhow, we eventually updated everything to make Intelligent Provisioning compatible with 2012 R2, went through the wizard and it went OK - until it came to KB2919355. After about 3 restarts and BSODs it eventually booted to Windows. I then restarted it about 10 times to see how consistent this boot failure was. Unfortunately it booted every time, which means the fault may have been fixed, ignored or just lurking in the background, waiting for a time when we really need the server to start.

I have no idea how the drivers or server firmware made it past quality control.

Rant over.

Thanks for you reply!
I don't know what to say, I must agree with you, miserable job from HP regarding this FW/driver thing. On the other hand, as I mentioned before, everything works fine with 2008 r2 driver, but again, this isn't solution. In the meantime, I've escalated my problem directly to HP, but still no solution provided from their side.

Try this Microsoft hotfix: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2966870

I had this problem on a ML350e Gen8 (B120i controller) and could reproduce that it indeed was caused by the KB2919355 update (clean install from DVD with 62.10.0.64 driver worked fine, then KB2919355 + prerequisites resulted in a failure to boot). I booted the recovery console and added the truncatememory bcd parameter (see "workaround 2" on that hotfix page) to get the server to boot again, then I removed that bcd entry and installed the hotfix. Server is working fine now.

I can´t say, how much this post helped me! I´ve been running two ML310e Gen8 v2 together with Win 2012 Foundation and this has become quite a problem. BSOD everytime I tried to boot Windows, nevertheless replacing the RAID driver with the one from 2008 R2 completely solved the hassle.

Man, does nobody from  HP staff really know about this fact that the original driver is unusable with these servers?

But really, thanks for the posts!

I recently battled this issue with one of our servers, eventually (6 1/2 hours later), I was able to boot to the desktop and apply the patch (2966870). All is good.

My question is I have 3 other identical servers at various locations that are asking to apply 2919355. Can I install 2966870 before 2919355 to avoid this problem. I can't get a clear answer from Google.

Thank you for your time!

Richard Lee,

Did you ever figure out if your idea worked? I have an ML350e Gen8 that I'm convinced plots against me while I sleep. I'm hoping that you were able to apply 2966870 before 2919355 and it will work for me, too.

Thanks for any information you could provide!
