I connect the tape to onboard SCSI but I cannot access the tape backup. If I click Inventory (My Computer -> right click -> Manage -> Storage -> Removable Storage -> Physical Locations), there is error message тАЬThe resource required for this operation does not existтАЭ. And there is cross sign on the tape name.
My computer spec is:
- Proliant ML350 G3
- Smart Array 532
- OS Windows 2000 Small Business SP3
Help is greatly appreciated.

SolutionAre you sure 100% that is an ML350G3?
Officially smart array 532 could support this DAT:
Universal Hot Plug Tape Drives
AIT 50 GB, Hot Plug (Carbon)
215487-B21
AIT 35 GB, LVD Hot Plug (Carbon)
216886-B21
20/40-GB DAT, Hot Plug (Carbon)
215488-B21

Re: Proliant ML350 G3 and HP StorageWorks DAT 160 SCSI
Attach the tape drive to the on-board SCSI, using the cable that came with the server.
During POST the DAT should be listet.
If not You got a problem above.
I'll get back to that.
If the drive is listet.
In device manager you should now see the DAT.
You might have to install drivers.
To test the drive from windows.
Go to HP.com and download
Library and tape tools.
Install and test.
Don't run L&TT if the drive isn't listet in device manager, and drivers installed.
All services for the backup application must be stopped, when running L&TT.
Link to L&TT:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/ltt/index.html
The physical connection.
You must use the cable, that is supplied with the server. It's not special cables, but they allways work (except if it's defective).
Insure the the SCSI ID isn't conflikting with something else on the SCSI bus.
Drive will come with ID 5 default (If I remember correctly).
Do not change any other jumper/switch than the ID, and only change ID if needed.
All other settings is correct from factury.
Did you remeber to put power cable on the Tape drive?

Re: Proliant ML350 G3 and HP StorageWorks DAT 160 SCSI
you shouldnot be using onbaord scisi controller that is for disks for tape unit
use a controller from here
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11430_na/11430_na.HTML#Storage
just look under storage tab
Tape Drives, Tape Autoloaders & Tape Libraries
and you will seee alist of supported controllers for tape unit

Re: Proliant ML350 G3 and HP StorageWorks DAT 160 SCSI
I disagree. I see no reason, why Hence shouldn't use the onboard. The on-board has always been for tape and HDD use.
In the quickspec, they do recommend faster controllers, Ultra 320. Since the on-board is only Ultra 3.
If he can live with the lower performance. Then it's ok.
The question is. Can the disk subsystem saturate the SCSI controller?
It can't, the HDD's are connected to a SA532, wich is Ultra 3 also.
It's also possible to put the tape drive on the Smart Array.
But you must make sure, that the SCSI ID doesn't conflict!

promote the side effect known to us all ,
which can cause degradation of the disk subsystem speeds
AKA Headbang :)

Re: Proliant ML350 G3 and HP StorageWorks DAT 160 SCSI
He's got a SA532, and I do expect that he is using that for the disks.
And if you got the disks on channel 1 and the tape drive on channel 2. Then there's no issue.
Note in servers like the older DL380, the external, onboard knockout is labeled for tape only.
Also in, not so big companies, the backup is running during the night, so performance might not be an issue.

Re: Proliant ML350 G3 and HP StorageWorks DAT 160 SCSI
I use the SA532 just for Array RAID. And I connect the Tape Backup to the Onboard SCSI.
I already install the driver and it listed in device manager as Hewlett Packard DAT 160 Drive. The tape status is 'This device is working properly'. The driver version is 1.7.0.1 (date 2009/04/15).
I have checked the device with L&TT. L&TT found the tape at address 3/0/3/0. But when initializing diagnotic, there is error 'The diagnostic functions are operating in restricted mode. Some function may be disabled or limited while operating in restricted mode. The restricted mode is entered if either the Product ID is not properly recognized, or if the device operates in boot code and requires a firmware update.'
If the tape drive cannot be attached to onboard SCSI, what additional card should I buy?
Thanks
