Proliant ML350 g5 shutting down unexpectedly

Trying to troubleshoot the frequent unexpected shutdown of one of our servers which is a proliant ml350 g5 on windows 2003 server sp1.

Looking at the event logs -i dont see anything concrete that is causing these shutdown unexpectedly.

I just get the Event ID: 1076 and the reason code 0xa000000.

I had researched this code and it has nothing to do with the cause of the system shutdown.

I had also looked at the HP Proliant integrated Management Log viewer but can't see anything concrete either.

I'm leaning on changing the power supply and see if this will resolve this.

Please let me know what else I can try or test. ty.

Also does anybody know the business contact # for HP?

Re: Proliant ML350 g5 shutting down unexpectedly

hi,

Your troubleshooting is in the right direction. The issue is most probably related to the PSUs.

Some other reason can be:

UPS connected to the server

PCI cards installed in the server

Old FW and driver versions

Thanks

How often do these random shutdowns happen?  Do you have any other machines running from the same power source?  Though I would have to say based on the information you have given so far that the psu is a likely culprit.

Re: Proliant ML350 g5 shutting down unexpectedly

I am also having the same issue. I bypassed the UPS last night but still got the unexpected shutdown. I am waiting for HP Support to get back to me as i have forwarded them our server reports. Now that we have confirmed the UPS in not the issue, they will be providing me with the next course of action later today.

If anyone has resolved this issue please post.

Re: Proliant ML350 g5 shutting down unexpectedly

PS Looking at the logs, the system has previously shutdown on 6/6/2012, 13/06/2012, 16/09/2012, 19/09/2012, 21/09/2012, 24/09/2012, 25/09/2012(3:31PM) and 25/09/2012(7:47PM)
I have only just inherited this network so fun times ahead...

Re: Proliant ML350 g5 shutting down unexpectedly

I am having the PSU replaced tomorrow, will keep you posted... most other forums also point to a faulty PSU for this issue... some have the UPS, but since we bypassed the UPS and got the same issue we have ruled that out...

Re: Proliant ML350 g5 shutting down unexpectedly

i had updated the firmware from a 2008 to the latest version yesterday, no unexpected shutdowns overnight which is a good sign, still will be having the PSU replaced today. Will log back in a week and let you guys know that hopefully everything is good!

Re: Proliant ML350 g5 shutting down unexpectedly

updating BIOS firmware or replacing the PSU or doing both has resolved the issue
